How do I Sell a car with a blown motor in Cali?

I'm selling my 91 RX-7, and it has a blown engine but a very clean exterior. How do I sell the car without getting a smog certificate? On the DMV website it says the seller is required to show proof of smog, but if its not running how do you go about doing this? It has a clean title, and I would hate to have to salvage or junk it. Thanks.

I think after January 1st. you don't have to smog a vehicle prior to selling it, or so I've heard.

Seller is legally responsible for the car passing smog, but if you and the buyer agree that he will smog it after he buys it from you then DMV doesnt care. Just as long as someone gets it to pass smog.

If he doesn't fix the car within 90 days, what legal issues would I have to deal with?

That would be fine with me...that is how it is registered right now. Does anyone else know if this possible?

None that I know of. I just bought a car a few months ago and the seller and I agreed I would smog it. Went to the DMV the next day to transfer the title, they said ok just get a smog and it will be complete. I asked how long I had to smog it, the guy said "as soon as possible". That was 3 months ago.

All you gotta do is write up a simple Bill of Sale that states all the needed information. Something like "I _______ sell this ________ VIN:________ to _______ for ___________ in AS-IS condition with no implied warranty whatsoever. Buyer is responsible for smog and registration." Both of you should sign and date it, and you should have a copy for each person.

This is how I have bought a few cars, got them cheaper because they wouldn't pass smog and fixed whatever I needed to. If you still have questions and are anywhere near Sunnyvale, go to the "MVD Registration Service" on the corner of Wolfe and Reed and they can help you with whatever you need. Great place, no lines. I have reg'd my last 4 cars there with no issues.

The car is in the "cars for sale" forum if anyone is interested. Right now I have someone offering $1500 and they are comming to see the car today, but if he doesn't buy it I'll keep the add up. It is a base model in very good condition.

Thanks for all the info, I guess I don't really have to worry about the smog then. I will let the buyer deal with all the DMV hassle.

sell it with planned non-op. put it in your receipt/bill of sale that you have him sign, that it is non-op. then if he registers it and says you didn't smog it, you've got proof.
