How auto service shops SHOULD work
I was just thinking it seems like the big dealer shops have it all wrong, they spend tmost of the morning bringing in appointments, shuffling cars, maybe getting one or two bays started with one tech each, then spend the whole day with lone technicians working on everyones cars serially on all the lifts.
so if you need your oil changed, you make an appointment and it still takes all day, god forbid you need more then that
I'm thinking it would be way more effecient if they did it like a WRC service crew, put 5 guys on it and any job- from a tire rotation to a long block and gearbox swap is outta there in under 30 minutes.
Wouldn't you go to a dealer (or performance shop- hint hint
) that did service like that?

What happens when you rush all day long at something that you know how to do?
I'm not trying to be argumentative - it's just that I was in Auto Service Management for nearly 5 years and I can honestly say that I would rather give the jobs to my sure but slow turtle techs. vs. the rushin' rabbits. Well, at least if I liked the customer at all.
I can see how it would be cool to have a "pit-crew" type situation going on - but that's the reason why Jiffy Lube pays out on so many complaints and bought multiple engine swap jobs at my dealership... Just food for thought.

yeah I was kinda only joking in the first place, then he has to go and interject reality.
Although I still think with a select clientele and the right team of technicians it could be a viable proposition.

I think it would be cool too!
It would remind me of my old school drag racing days when NOTHING short of an engine block splitting apart would keep us from making the next round... I mean we changed head gaskets, pistons, valvesprings, etc. at the track (sometimes over multi-day events) just to keep racing. It was a flurry of activity with 3-5 guys just doin' what needed doin' and not getting in eachother's way. It was SWEET.

well now that we're on reality alot of the time for real work is diagnostics. asl to have 5 guys work on one oil change is ridiculous considering you could pay a peon nickels and dimes to do oil changes.
but hey if i ever get around to opening a repair shop i'll keep your idea in mind hell can get front row seats too
