Housing share.

So my girlfriend Jess and I are looking for an apartment. [rant] Every thing we have looked that we can afford is DEPRESSING as $%@# They have all been run down holes in the wall with a bunch of shady looking people living all around you with a billion screaming kids and no garage parking.
[/rant}

So anyone interested in getting a house with us in the Palo Alto, Mountain View, Menlo Park area?

Or this dope looking cabin in La Honda?
Beautiful Private Cabin Nestled in La Honda

Let me know if your interested and we can discuss things further.

I've been looking at house rentals recently but unfortunately not in those areas, mostly east bay. Def wish you guys the best of luck, its been super difficult finding a place that is the right balance of nice/affordable.

Just for reference, I rent a house in Campbelll/Los Gatos area and I pay $2400 a month. 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 story but top floor is just 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom. 2 car garage and a small backyard.

I would like to stay close to Palo Alto as that is where all my friends live.

I could go south to about Sunnyvale and north as far as Redwood city los altos and los altos hills or portola valley would be nice too.

I would like to pay around $1400-1800 for me and my lady.

you could almost buy a house for that much
350-450k loan with good credit and decent down payment is around 22-2500
get a roomate and charge 600 and you're in the ball park
plus you OWN it not paying for some one else's mortgage

There should be a pretty huge difference between housing costs in areas like Lost Altos Hills/Los Altos/Palo Alto (the nice part of PA) compared to Sunnyvale and some other more affordable areas. Just a heads up!

like you said, this requires a pretty decent down payment...

factoring in property taxes, homeowners insurance, maintenance, vacancy allowance, etc, etc gets out of the 1400-1800 + $600 range fairly quickly.

Damn, my roommate whom whose name is on the lease of the townhouse that we currently live in might be taking a job offer in New York by the end of the month. If he takes it, that doesn't necessarily mean that I'll have a room available because the landlord might want his pad back or rent it out to other people. However, I'm going to see if I can just renew the lease and transfer my name over if my roommate does decide to work in NY.
I live up on communications hill in south SJ and its a 3bd/3.5bath townhouse. Every bedroom is basically a master suite. The cost for rent would be $750 for the room plus a little extra few $$ for like cable, Internet, utils etc.
If all goes as anticipated I will be posting a thread with details. IF NOT, then that would mean me and my girl will be looking for a place as well. I'd be willing to stay out in the Campbell, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and Cupertino areas if not in SJ and can shell out $800 for rent. I just hate this waiting game because at any point I may have to pack all my siht and relocate. Good luck to us all!

Not really. I pay $1417 a month for my house including property tax, PMI and homeowners insurance and bought my house for $198,000. A $300,000 house with all of that included would be closer to $3000.

Wow. Anything livable in the area I rent would be near $1M. Back in '08 we were cruising around with a realtor and $80k in cash looking for a house. Things seemed weird so we did not buy anything. With that much for down plus closing costs, and looking for a 2/1 in the San Carlos area, we were looking at an entry cost of around $750k which was at a bare minimum $4,800/month with the info we were given, including insurance/etc. This is with a pretty solid down. I have heard of people talking about better deals, but when it comes down to it - there is always a catch or something fishy like they forgot to mention a relative gave them $200k.

Yeah, people say CA sucks but it's a lot of talk. We felt the same way so we moved to two different states and well, we are back. I guess it sucks more in those places? Maybe. Rent is a ***** and things are really weird now. Before I moved back home (Hilo, HI) I was paying $1,400/mo for a pretty sweet 2/2 in Sunnyvale. Now that same place is over $2k/mo. We moved from HMB 9/2011 @ $1,850/mo for a 2/2 house w/ garage which is now being rented for $2,400. We are paying $2k/mo for a place - signed the lease in March, and a unit couple doors down is on CL right now for $2,700/mo.

The bay is so damn expensive. I thought about getting a nice house out in Tracy / Mountain House since I work in Livermore but damn the heat sucks big time.
