help me build a sound system for my new house
of my many recent purchases i secured a nice new 4/3 w/pool on a 9800sqft lot. couldnt be happier
so my current system needs to go. im going to list what i have in mind and would like people who actually take their home systems to the next level to comment.
i want to keep it somewhat simple and use mid range parts.
for speakers im looking at the Klipsch - HD Theater 300 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker System with Powered Subwoofer
for a reciever a pioneer or onkyo unit. something 4-700 watts. min of 4 hdmi inputs(dvd,PS3,XBOX,cable)
i plan on adding 2 outdoor speakers to the system. nothing serious, just good clear sound.
the klipsch gets good reviews and the pioneer VSX-820-K has good reviews as well but im a huge fan of onkyo, they are always under rated in the power dept.

If you are wanting to make some impressive sound and/or fill a large room, you will want to stay away from packaged speaker systems and receivers. Klipsch makes/has made some great gear - the only downside I have ever heard is the classic loaded horn systems can be on the bright side especially in a room with lots of reflective materials (tile, hardwood, etc). Onkyo used to make awesome stuff, but I know nothing about their new gear.
If you don't really care about the sound quality and sound impact the items you mention will be fine, and should work well with the need for HDMI inputs, buzzwords/features and such. Most people really don't care and have never experienced a full blown high quality system. A cool thing to do would be to check out some sound shops and just "take a listen" although a listening room has little to do with your home's sound situation, it will give you an idea. Take some media you like, and have listened to before.
I am looking to go the other direction and scale down to something much simpler. Just remember though, it's either "nothing serious" or "good clean sound" - not both.

i have a full harmon kardon 7.1 surround sound if your interested. this thing was used for a week and put back. it sounds INSANE! and is high german quality. let me know if your interested. i got it for a good deal last year and can give it to you for a good deal. its just taking space in my garage. its still in the box.
Are you talking for one specific room? For a house that size have you thought about wiring the rest of the house run into a centralized place?
For the one main room, what does the room look like? Like said above, I would stay away from any box speaker system. Set a budget because you will end up spending much more on your speakers than your receiver. Take a look at avsforum.com, lots of good info there.
For receivers, check out Denon. For speakers, there are many options limited really by your budget. Look into floor standing fronts with a matching center and then get your surround speakers. Then there is the sub. Lots of options.

dual 15"s in a sealed enclosure delivers crazy tight precise bass.
i spent months comparing subs on avsforum and this 1 seemed to be the best bang for the buck under $1k and even beating some over that.

If I was building something for a house that I owned I'd go all out. Do internal speakers. Jeff has some speakers in his ceiling over the couch and when that sucker is pumped up it sounds AMAZING....
I'd go with internal mounts so you can walk mount the tv and stash the receiver... less wires all over the damn place.
