Help convincing parents of WRX vs 2.5rs
After going to the dealership and test driving the wrx, my parents seemed to really like it. This was good until the guy mentioned the 2.5rs being the same car but w/o the turbo. I was pretty mad since he forgot to mention a different engine, suspension, and interior. He also said that the WRX is 5,000 more because of the turbo. On the way home i explained that it isn't only the turbo you pay for. But are there any other good points i can make out to convince them of only getting the WRX.

Leather wrapped wheel / shifter, nicer interior, aluminum pedals, superior brakes, etc. Push hard on the fact that the wrx gets a good crash rating, has side airbags, AND was just recently ranked one of car & driver's top 10 cars for the 2nd year in a row. My parents were looking at a buick rondevouz and I convinced them to get a WRX. And that was a change from a 91 eddie bauer explorer
. It takes time, but keep at it. Don't force anything on them, as they are ultimately paying, but let them know that you have an informed opinion on the car, and that you're not alone in thinking the wrx is an awesome car. Dont keep mentioning that the wrx is a lot faster unless your dad is into that

Here are a few things I can think of:
* Smaller but turbocharged and intercooled DOHC engine
* Direct ignition system with platinum-tipped spark plugs
* More sophisticated AWD system with viscuous rear limited-slip differential (which translates to better handling and higher safety)
* Larger 11.4" ventilated disc brakes (up from 10.7" on the 2.5 RS)
* Aluminum-alloy hood, functional hood scoop, aerodynamic side ground effects molding, and dual outlet sport tailpipe
* Side-impact airbags
* Higher quality MOMO steering wheel, drilled aluminum pedals (5-speed only), and interior
* Illuminated ignition switch ring
* Standard in-dash 6-CD player with cassette player and six speakers (up from four on the 2.5 RS and TS)
* Only 1 mpg less in both city and highway estimates compared to 2.5 RS
And don't forget about the torrid performance! That is, unless that type of thing would make your parents opt for something slower, like a Corolla or some other piece.

Much like Driveway said, tell them about how it made Car & Driver's Ten Best List. Also show them all the other literature that shows the WRX as one of the best.
A good magazine is Consumer Reports which recommends the WRX and shows that it has a good crash rating and good reliability.
You can also compare the WRX to much more expensive awd cars such as the Audi A4 and BMW Xi. The WRX is appealing because it offers the same level of performance for $10000 less.
I wouldnt give your parents the specs unless they are hardcore gearheads and appreciate that kind of stuff.
Hope that helps. Good luck with your parents. And even if you dont get a WRX a 2.5RS is still a good car. Just remember you can always mod a car when you get it.

There is nothting wrong with the RS. If your parents are more willing to get that then the WRX, then do that and tell them they owe you one. (IE mod money
)
The interior, suspension and most everything other than the engine is really the same on the RS. So trying to argue that would just be a lie

The main reason i dont want the rs is because there wont be any to mod it. If i get the wrx i will have performance until i save up enough to gradually mod it. While with the rs the money i have to even mod it to make it somewhat quiker wont be that much. If i wait till summer i will have a job by then, but thats prety far.

Not to rain on your parade, but who is paying the insurance? If it's you then you might want to get quotes and think about it more. If it's your parents then try to avoid any insurance questions until you buy the car.
The WRX premiums are inflated compared to other cars. It seems a lot of people destroy WRXs (I know, I see more of them in the junk yards than on the road) so the insurance agencies have raised the premiums. Just something to think about.

Here's my story from 1.5 months ago:
I, like yourself, wanted the WRX cuz my old car was already sold off. My dad was willing to buy me a new car, but his budget was $20,000 firm. Well, my dad and I had several terrible weekends back to back to back, fighting each other about what to get. I admit, I sometimes acted all spoiled, but i figured this was gonna be the car I drive and "I ain't drivin' no Toyota echo (what he wanted to get me at first)." Anyway, we somehow make it to the Subie dealer. They had a couple of WRXs on the floor but they were marked up to $29,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Long story short, I ended up w/ a 2.5RS, which came out to $21,6xx anyway. Just ignore the sticker prices at the dealer, tell your dad this: "the 2.5RS will come out to $22,000 anyway, and you could get a WRX for pocket change more (which is true)." I'm pretty mad about my RS right now.....knowing i could've had a WRX.
Oh, and my car HAD to be new according to my dad, cuz of the warranty. On top of that, I HAD to promise my dad I won't get a motorcycle (i have my license) since he was "getting me the 2.5....."
Good luck and don't give up.
