Exclamation HELP, car idle keeps getting stuck 1000rpms

Ok this is the 4th time my car has done this in the past week. Basically after my car warms up it idles at 500rpm = normal. But after I go drive it, come up to a stop and its idling at 1000rpm. So when I shift the rpms shoot up +500 and makes for really sloppy shifting. The only way I can get the rpms back to 500 is to open the hood and push down on the lever for the cable, but once the first rev goes it stays right back at 1000 again! I tried fiddling with the cable adjustment but didn't seem to do much. And I sprayed a little bit of wd-40 on the areas with the levers thinking maybe there was some grime in there holding it back but it did not help anything. MPJ and Gruppe-S didn't know why my car was doing this and I don't wanna get raped by the dealer to make some stupid adjustment. Anybody got some advice on this?? I don't want to drive it much now cause it'll probably ruin my clutch if I don't get this fixed.

Do you think I should check all my vacume hoses that are attached to my airbox? Maybe revmove them and replace while checking for holes?

You would want check all your vacumme hoses. I have also heard that old a/c pumps would make your motor run a little harder.

When I'm stuck with a problem about my car, I usually go to several different mechanic shops to get a free estimate. Ask them what is actually wrong with the car and what they would have to do in order to fix it. Then with all that info, go fix it yourself.

Why would you suspect a vacuum leak if the physical throttle isn't closing all the way?

check around the intake manifold and airbox, there should be a bunch of taps coming off of it.

Do you have a CEL?

I don't think thats the case as the car idles at 500 when it's warmed up, unless he pushes down on the cable every night so he can warm up at 500rpms...

usually the IAC valve helps to maintain idle, but I think if everything else is set correctly, a leak would throw the whole system out of wack...

had the same thing happen with a friend's civic, found a vaccum tube that was connected but had a crack in it.

hope this helps...

I think he was saying that after he uses the throttle at all...it stays high.

Warms up (ie, no throttle) ---->500rpm idle--->"But after I go drive it, come up to a stop"---->1000rpm idle

You could be right, but sounds like the throttle cable it sticking if pushing on it has any effect at all.

what about the night before after his drive? the throttle won't magically unstick itself and shut closer....

Didn't read the rest of the thread, but it sounds like a stuck throttle cable... maybe your vaccume hoses also.

Yea your right. When I got to school the car was idling at 1000rpm. Then left school after a couple hours and the car warmed up and stayed at 500rpms. After driving home the needle was back at 1000-900rpms again.

Ok, update...

Took apart my airbox and filter box
Disconnected vacume hoses from airbox
Inspected all vacume hoses and connections to engine/box

-One thing that caught my attention was the bottom edge of my filter box was not fit into the 3 plastic tabs sticking off but the two metal folding clamps were in the right place.

Reinstalled airbox and connected vacume hoses
Fit filter box properly into 3 tabs and snapped down the two metal tabs securly
Put rest of stock intake system back together making sure everything was tight
Started up the car to operating temp
Idled at 500rpms
Rev to 3000rpm and it returned back to 500rpms like normal
Drove the car around town a bit and on the freeway
Remained at 500rpms at all stoplights
Drove home into garage and revved some more, still retained 500rpm idle
Shut off car for 5min
Restarted car
Revved up 3000rpms
Got stuck at 1000rpms
Pushed cable lever back down
500rpm
Revved 3000rpms
Back at 1000rpm idle ......OK W T F !!!!!!??????

This is annoying the HELL out of me, omg! Any other ideas besides the vacume hoses?
