Help!!! Can anyone tell me what this is?

I am driving down 87, when I hear what sounds like metal on metal grinding. At first I thought, I need to change out the pads. As I continued driving, I noticed that the subie was slightly moving left and right. Then, then I look in my mirror and saw that my rear tire was going in and out of the wheel well. I pulled over immediately and called for a tow. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Loose lugs nuts? I've had that happen, sounds like metal grinding.

I was thinking it might be the wheel bearing. Is this a costly repair?

but check your lugs to see if they are all tight.

Then make a visual inspection to see if something just doesnt look right

Tighten all of your lug nuts, then jack the car up. If you can wiggle the wheel and it moves your wheel bearing is bad.

YUP!

Replacing the wheel bearing isn't that bad as long as you didn't jack up your hub. I went too long on mine and had to replace the hub too.

Hey guys, thanks for the input. I am hoping it's just the lugs, but I highly doubt it. At the shop now. I'll keep you all posted.

Mine went out a month ago as well. It was an early stage, thus hearing humming at about 65mph. I payed 270otd at AQ/Harman Motive. 45min job.

Got the subie back. It turned out to be both rear bearings. 660otd and towing was included. I was pretty bummed out when I heard the final cost, but luckily the shop gave me a 50/50 plan. pay half now and the other in a month. Saved my X'mas.
