Some jackass in a blue Ford Explorer almost sideswiped me earlier tonight because the old fart wanted to be a badass and try to zip in front of me before the two lanes merged. Grrrr. When the road unmerged again, I let him through and the focker flipped me off!
I dunno, I can't say all SUV drivers are bad. My friend can drive his Ford Explorer pretty well and it's a stick. He does some amazing things in that vehicle that you'd think only sport compacts can do. @_@

It's not the SUV's fault - it wouldn't have done that by itself. It's the incompetent driver's fault.
BTW - if I were ever in a place to own a minivan, I wouldn't. I hate minivans with a passion. I would probably end up with another Pathfinder or something because it's a good, fun, useful vehicle and it's pretty fun to drive. I would also continue to do my best not to hit other cars.

Im with everyone on the hating SUV's. They suck, 70% of people the drive them cant handle such a big car. When I get to Pleasaton (land fo SUV's) bart every morning there are at least 5-6 spaces every morning that some stupid *** SUV driver used becuase they cannot get their car in one spot. Its not that the spots are too small, its that people dont knwo how to park. I drove my familys Land Cruiser (tahoe and hauling havy things car) last summer and I hated it more then anything.

Stupid, inattentive, moronic, careless, irresponsible driver in a Civic or Legacy sucks. Putting that driver in a 4,000 SUV sucks more. Period.
SUVs, like guns, don't cause any problems in and of themselves (if you ignore the rediculously low mileage, extra resources consumed, and physical size taking up roadways and parking spaces) but put a dumbass behind the wheel, and their mistakes and misactions are magnified by a great degree.

I hate SUVs. I agree with the guy that said it is inconsiderate to drive these things on the road. I see way more SUVs riding in the fast lane, weaving, speeding, and tailgating/bullying smaller cars around then I see sports cars doing these same dangerous things (and sports cars could handle these dangerous maneuvers a lot better also).
1. If they crash into a car, they win, you lose. It is inconsiderate to drive such a dangerous weapon on the streets. If every one is carrying pistols, you shouldn't be carrying your missile launcher.
2. prone to flipping. SUVs flip way too often, very dangerous for ppl who they wind up smashing.
3. they pollute the air that we breathe. Yes, so do cars, but we need to at least keep it to a minimum.
4. they hinder safe vision on the roads. You cannot see past these bastards. Even if you're not tailgating and he slams on his breaks, you may be toast because you could not see the stop and go traffic ahead of him.
Anyone who buys one of these overpriced pieces of dookie *and does not use the cargo room, towing capacity, or offroad capability* is a dumbass.

from the NHTSA website:

while an SUV is more LIKELY to roll, since there are more passenger cars than SUVs, the numbers say that more rolls are of cars...

We really must be in Commifornia.
Who gives a shizz what someone else is driving. If you cant see around them...you are too close!
If they take the entire lane....so what its their lane!
If they fill the entire parking space....park somewhere else!
Its not the vehicle its the person driving it. I have a CDL and could drag a 40' er through places i see people in sedands freak about. I can parallel park it in one try....
We need to realize that each of us has our rights, but those rights do not include infringing upon the rights of others...If you are a safr driver it shouldnt matter what others do, you expect it and avoid it...(ok maybe the occastional ding or parking lot crunch is unavoidable, but that would happen no matter what they drive).
Im not asking for us to all get along, because that is a left-coast I'm owed something statement, but rather why dont we all just worry about ourselves and keep our noses out of other peoples business....
If you dont like SUV's - Dont get one....its that simple...
And for the person who said something about emmisions....I would love to compare my trucks emmisions to a WRX thats been all modded out......I go to UCKK every week and I smell more fuel and emmisions in the air there than I do at the Dunes or a 4x Jamboree.....

I dunno.....this is a topic that could be argued for years (and has been) going back and forth....the harsh reality is that just about anything that we do will induce some sort of pollution, so this is a problem that is collective of everyone on the planet.....and that includes everyone on this website too!

guess the BRAKE lights dont work either?!?
so anyone who buys an impreza AND NOT race, rally or go faster than the speed limit is a dumbass also?!?

First, I want to clarify that I am talking specifically about those huge *** SUVs (Hummers, Tahoes, Suburbans, etc), not the smaller ones like Escapes, Rav4s, etc).
The outdated, irrelevant bar chart:
There has got to be way more cars on the roads than there are SUVs. Not only are there probably a lot more cars sold today than there are SUVs, but SUVs are relatively new and there are hundreds of thousands of old *** cars still on the roads that were built before anyone even knew what an SUV was. I think you realized this as you mentioned it in your post, so why the bar chart? Everyone knows there are more cars, and probably more car flips. We are interested in percentages here, not sheer numbers.
The rear ending: I'm sorry that I forgot to mention the brake lights. I'll be more clear. With or without the brakelights working, if you can't see past the guy in front of you, it is much more dangerous. He slams on the brakes......and the brake lights light up......and he comes to a stop.....even if you're a good distance behind the guy....you have a higher probability of slamming into him. Also, with the exception of that new BMW with those brake lights that light up extra bright when you slam on the brakes as opposed to pressing on them, you cannot tell whether an SUV is slamming, or just slightly stepping on the brakes. I look through passenger cars windshields all the time to see of any hazards ahead to know whether they are coming to a complete stop or just slowing down.
The analogy to imprezas: The purpose of the SUV is towing capacity, cargo room, offroading ....correct (seriously here, correct me if i'm wrong)? If you don't use these features, you have just paid too much money for your SUV, and are paying way too much money at the gas station. This could be classified as a dumbass move imho. But as I posted 'does not use the cargo, towing, "or" offroad ability'. This means that if you use at least one of these features you are not a dumbass. So please don't get offended if you do use these features of the SUV- you are not a dumbass then, and I wasn't referring to you.
Just because you have a WRX means you have to go over the sped limit, or rally? Going over the speed limit is illegal and dangerous. Just because it has a powerful engine, and great handling doesn't mean that ppl have to race the things. One of the purposes of buying the WRX is to race or rally, but those are not the only reasons. The WRX wagon has good cargo capacity, spirited acceleration, decent towing capacity, an affordable price, and is fun to drive. A powerful engine means good acceleration......to get on freeways faster, merging, etc. It doesn't mean you have to drive 100 plus mph on the freeways. Every SUV sold today is capable of eclipsing the speed limit as well.
I got rear ended on 17 last week by a guy in a 1999 Suburban. Because he has the right to drive what ever he wants, without training or qualification, he now has a scratched bumper and my car is 2 feet shorter than it was. So either it takes longer for a SUV to stop safely and they should be driven slower than cars capable of stopping at a normal rate, or someone takes longer than me to process information at an exceptable rate. Since I made the decision to buy a WRX and he made the discission to buy a Suburban, I will leave it up to the I-Club members to figure out who has the best mental agility.
The fact is that SUV's take more from all aspects of infrastructure.
They take more resources from the environment to build, the take more fuel to operate, they hinder pedestrian safety when parked, their increased weght breaks down roadways at a faster rate thus increasing our tax burden.
In ten years most people will realize that SUV's are just the late 90's version of the Baby Blue leasure suit.
