Not sure what your mom can do seeing as how:

1) she knowingly parked in the handicapped spot
2) confessed to the cop that she did it knowingly
3) other spots were available for her to park

Kinda like 3 strikes and you're out. I'd say to pay and own up to it.

And if your mom does something like this again next time (hopefully she'll learn and won't) in the same circumstances, just say something like "sorry but it was raining so hard that i didn't kknow this was a spot i couldn't park in. let me move the car." or something to that same effect. could've made a difference in getting a ticket.

if i was your mom, instead of pulling up to the parking space, i'll just block it off and drop off your sister. its not like it makes THAT much of a difference of a walking distance and that would have saved her from the ticket. As for this ticket, i doubt you can fight it, jut like parking in a red zone.

focken pig. I tried to fight it since I clainmed they have no juresticition in private lots but they didn't let me off. They just kinda laught at me and made me pay for it.

Indeed, she said she knew she was in a handicap parking spot, that pretty much seals the deal right there. And if it was one of those spots with the sign on the post that says handicap, there's no way you can even say that she couldn't see it was a handicap spot because it was raining hard and the ground was distorted.

I always go by the rule that when you least expect it (in a parking lot with no cars) thats when its gonna hit ya. I don't even park in the "reserved for ucsc vehicles" spot when its during labor day and nobody's even at work on campus

Just the other day I was going down to my car in the parking lot of my apartment complex, and I was parked right next to a handicapped spot (The lines of the parking space are painted blue AND there is a Sign stating that it is reserved for the handicapped posted on the wall infront of the parking spot).....and as I got closer to my car I noticed a BMW parked in the handicapped space.....so I walked over to the Beamer, walked all around it 3 times looking for a handicapped sticker, license plate, or sign in the car.....nothing....some jerk parked his BMW in the handicapped spot OVER NIGHT....I was pissed, like this----> So being the nice guy that I am....I wrote a kind note stating that the parking spot was a handicapped spot....and if I see that car parked there again (without the proper permits) I will not hesitate to call the po po's.....and I left it on the car, and went to work.....when I got home the car was gone, and I have not seen it since.....but seriously...if you KNOW that is a handicapped spot and STILL park there...I have no simpathy, nor tolerance for that. Thats just not right....

I am not throwing flames at anyone....just making a general statement that if anyone parks in a handicapped spot knowingly.....and gets a ticket....well, you got what you deserved. (Atleast no one keyed your car for it, I have seen that before)

my 2¢

When it comes to parking violations, red zones and handicapped slots are definite things to avoid. Some police departments will even cite people who drop off someone else and then move off because technically these are NO STOPPING zones, except for their intended purposes (bus stop, fire hydrant, fire lane of apartment complex, etc.).

Sorry your mom will probably have to pay the fine. It really is better to heed posted signs.

I don't get parking citations except once in the past ten years because I forgot to curb my wheels when parked on a fairly steep hill in the City. Good call by the cops that time, IMO.

I've never parked in a handicapped spot. To me, it's like the space isn't even there.

I know there were other disabled spots available, but that doesn't make parking in one right. Just like if I was on the freeway and decided that I was going to drive as slow as I want in the fast lane (hey, everyone else can pass me in the slower lanes, right?). That doesn't make it right.

Please think about it from a disabled person's point of view. Is a disabled person supposed to park behind your mother's car and honk until she moves out of her space? This is not a flame, dude, I'm just trying to get you to see a disabled person's point of view.

What I dont understand it the local park and ride. They actually paid to paint out 3 handicap spots in the lot. WTF for? The need to be closer to what exactly when parking to commute? All it did was waste 3 spots in the lot and our money converting the spaces.

(Edgewood & 280 btw).

Unfortunately, red zones and handicapped parking means no parking or stopping at any time. Won't matter if someone's sitting in the vehicle with engine running or not.

I think most of us have gotten used to seeing handicapped parking with their blue signs or painted insignia in parking lots in most cities. In front of some businesses, you may rarely see anyone use those parking spots so it seems like so much of a hassle to park 20 or 30 yards away when there are no handicapped-plaquered cars around.

On the other hand, picture a truly disabled person who drives up with their hand-controlled vehicle with nowhere close by to park. For them to use their 'walker' and travel that 20 or 30 yards is much more than an inconvenience - it might mean they cannot shop at that place of business that day.

It's an adjustment we all should try to make because it can help the less fortunate lead at least part of their lives self-sufficiently.
