Guys with loud exhaust must read!
Not sure if anyone post this before, but I want to share what I heard from a friend today.
Just visited a friend today who's a smog tech, he knew that I have a WRX and he warned me about the "new" smog note he just got from the office. He told me that he received a note/letter from BAR for "smog for Subaru" or something saying that a Subaru fellow who recently got pulled for loud exhaust, the guy showed the police his smog cert that he just got and tried to talk his way out that way. I guess he was trying to say, "I just got smogged with the exhaust on and it passed!" <stupid move! Then of course the cop didn't care about it, and gave him a ticket for the ref and somehow they found out it was a fake smog, I don't how they find out, my friend didn't say much detail, and all he knew was the smog tech got caught doing that too, so if my friend got that letter, most likely all smog tech will get it too and they will not pass visual easily like before. They will look deep into what modification you have, things like that! Basicly they will ONLY do cars with any mods at all, not even a Carb exhaust he said. Again, this is not a new rules or regulations, this is just something I heard today and want to share to my Suby fellow, so WATCH OUT guys if you have loud exhaust, buying a Suby, transferring title or need to renew your registration, make sure you can at least pass visual, haha!

Yea how about no. Im a smog tech and havent gotten any letters about Subarus specifically. Catbacks still dont matter for smogs and anything with a legal CARB number will and should pass. If it doesnt go to the BAR and they will get your money back and punish the tech who illegally failed the car.
They can turn you away from smogging your car though if they're not comfortable (grey area issues) or ask you to take it to the referee. Thats perfectly legal.

the smog tech checked the carb number on my intake and said it's for an 02 not 03 (which is my car). He said he'll pass me that time -____-
Exhaust sound has nothing to do with smog. If there is a non-stock downpipe in the car then that would directly affect the smog levels for the car. The catback portion is only for noise / looks.
If the friend was busted for anything it would have been for a modified downpipe section of the exhaust or else this would be the first time I have ever heard of a smog shop getting busted for a sound law violation.
