I would tell him you don't have the money to give back to him. I would suggest directing him to i-club and suggesting other places that he can resell the rims. Besides, assuming you gave him a good price... he should have no problem reselling it. In fact, maybe he could sell them for more.
I accidentally bought an incorrect part and resold it.

btw: "i tried to put the rims on my car and they didn't fit
i was wondering if i could get my money back
sorry about all the trouble"
he sounds like he's being nice about it... don't worry.
Post a thread in NorCal classifieds about the rims... maybe you can help him out with a sale

He's gonna kill you!
If he bought it from you, I'm sure someone else will buy it from him. He'll prolly lose some $$$ in the next transaction, but that's his bad. I've bought stuff that wasn't quite right for my car, but it was all disclosed...so i sucked it up.
Since you told him straight up all the specs and he agreed, it's a done deal. You're not some store that offers refunds.
If all else fails...invest in a good bulletproof vest or some type of video surveillence. i keeeed, i keeeed.
good luck to you

Like other people said, it's OBVIOUSLY not fair if you give him a refund, given the fact everything was examined yada yada.
But to be a nice guy, you SHOULD help him sell it.

if you still had the cash I'd say hook the dude up....stupid is stupid. We must have some pitty for the stupid.
but since you don't....tell the kid he's out of luck and tell him to put it up for sale on these websites.
Craigslist.org, Superhonda.com, Honda-tech.com, nasioc.com, Partstrader.com.
He should sell those wheels with in a week or two between the sites. But make sure he has the correct specs on the wheels. offset and lug pattern...etc.
I had a deal with this cat back in the day when I had my civic. I bought a full AEM get up. Cam gear. pullies. fuel rail. whole bit. I checked with him like 10 times...my car is this..I need this. Yeah they fit he says. I get home. Pull my fuel rail off...wrong damn fuel rail. I got pissed told him what was up but didn't make a big deal out of not getting my money back. I should have done what? that's right...asked for PART NUMBERS. Buyers responsibilty to be very specifc and get specific information.
Shoot I still have the damn cam gear in my closet. I sold the pullies in like a week and I gave the ruel rail to my buddy. Shoot I still have a custom ground cam sitting at my feet for that damn car. Well it's actually for a CRX si. 89-91.

eh, tell him to suck it up.
my friend just bought c2's for his jetta off a guy used and he just got spaces for them after realizing it didnt' fit. I think they were like 40 bucks? just needed it for the front anyways.

Thanks for everyones opinions, I just got out of school. Thats the thing, I gave him all the specs i.e. pattern, offsize, and what not, so I honestly dont think I jipped him and plus I sold the rims for less then they were worth. And I did do the stupid thing and sold them from my house, so hopefully he wont go crazy and go to my house and mess it up.

he should of known that they would not fit his civic. it was his mistake to buy them after you gave him the specs. he should have done a little more research first.

Also, Im not sure wheter the pattern doesnt fit or it is the lugs that doesnt fit. I had the same problem when I had them, the lug nuts were too big to fit in the rims. I sold him the rims as is, without any lugs and I think thats why he wants a refund, because his stock honda lugs doesnt fit the rims. So should I just tell him to find a auto place that sells the lugs and does anyone here know where to get lugs for rims?
