So maybe that little nerd was wrong... I'd love to just give someone my IP and he gives me his and we hook it up and race together.
Marc, how does it work with the games you mentioned?

jason,
Pretty well. Somtimes there is lag with SOCOM and it could get annoying. I think it depends where your host is located. With Tony Hawk it's a little better because there are dedicated servers for your games. Whereas SOCOM there are no dedicated servers and the players themselves host.
I am concerned of how online play is going to be with GT4 and racing games in general. Auto Modellista's online was a little weird - there would be races where I could have sworn I was leading at the end of the race but when i finally crossed the finish line the game said I came in second. Made me mad on numerous occasions. Let's hope GT4 doesn't have that problem.

Sony's online model, is pretty open-ended. For third party titles, they leave the subscription model (free or subscription based) up to the publisher of the game. Sony's own first party titles, so far, have all been free subscription. You buy the game and a network adapter, configure, and play.
I'm not sure what Sony is going to do for GT4 in regards to the subscription model, but I'm hoping it will be free.
As for the way it plays online, I tried it out at E3 and it was very smooth. I didn't notice any lag on it all. Of course, that was a controlled environment, so who knows.

When i was in the service all we played was GT1-3 and swapped memory cards for months. I sold my PS2 awhile ago but i'm hoping Sony may start a combo deal with this game like they did for GT3. PS2 here i come!

I heard a rumor that there will be aftermarket parts for the cars. In other words, you buy a GT wing, the wing is visible in game. A rumor at this point but fingers are crossed.
