got tix (carpool)
i got my first ticket today going in the carpool lane onto the on ramp going 50 west from sunrise and at first i was in the correct lane and then all of a sudden the car in front of me slamms on the brakes and i swerve into the carpool lane and speed up ( to 40) and there is a cop right in front of me?
i know i shouldnt be in the carpool lane at all and i know its my fault.
do you guys know how much will i have to pay? and if i can go to traffic school for that? I having gone to traffic school since 1998
thanks for the inputs guys, much appreciated!

Carpool/Stop sign/Stoplight are all around $271 in the bay area. If you haven't been to traffic school since 98, you should be able to do it, as carpool is a minor infraction and should only be 1 point.
However.........i wonder if you can fight it at all? I mean the guy in front of you slammed his brakes, so instead of slamming your brakes, changing lanes allowed the person behind you to have ample braking distance for the car that braked in the first place.....i dunno, maybe the judge at your court will have some understanding of the situation, but then again they'll probably try to get you anyway.

My co-worker was cited for using the carpool lane. I thought the fine was $271 for the first offense but she told me when she went to court the total she paid was $300+.

Her case was different than yours. She used the carpool lane fairly regularly, switching to and from the adjacent lane as traffic opened up. She told the CHP motorcycle officer that she swerved into the lane to avoid hitting another vehicle but he'd been pacing her for a couple of hundred yards and cited her anyway.
I don't know why she didn't pursue traffic school.
Good luck on your case.

My fine was about 320 something earlier this year for getting caught in the carpool lane. The good news is that it is not a ticket that will put a point on your record.
So, traffic school isnt even necessary for this ticket. Good luck if you decide to fight it.

271 is the "invoice" :P citation, then there's all the administrative fees that get it up around 3-something. I had a red light violation (didn't stop cuz the light turned green while i was slowing down and i was hidden behind a huge semi) and it was $271 on the citation, 340 when i was done at the court

Just be prepared to answer the following questions from the judge:
1) Why weren't you paying attention to the car in front of you so that you would have ample time to stop?
2) How close to the car in front of you were you following?
3) How fast were you going when the car in front of you began to brake? (Do not answer with anything more than the posted speed limit)
4) Why were you going so fast that you did not have enough room to stop?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I guarantee you they will ask. They've got a question/answer for everything.

There is a chance that the fine will be reduced to ~$110.
The is how. Years ago, I was in SF court for a different ticket, and the court representative came out before the Judge came in and said that the judge is willing to reduce the car pool citations from $271 to ~$110 and you can sign up for traffic school if you just want to plead no contest now, and not waste the judge's time. Then the court rep said that if you wanted to "try" and fight the ticket, that this offer will not be offered again. Also went on to say that it is most likely that you will not beat this ticket.
Just my .02
