Got into a bad accident, can I get your advice please?

Hey all,

Crashed into an SUV on 880 north just south of the calaveras exit.
Vehicle in my lane swerved out and revealed a parked Ford Explorer which I did not break in time and hit.

I went under, the explorer took no damage (well some of my bumper paint scraped onto it's rear bumper, but that's it) It is a rental car.

My hood was smashed in, and the driver's side front quarterpanel bent, the grill is fine, the bumper is fine but the top part of it got ripped out so I guess it is not fine . Radiator smashed in. After the accident my car would start but very roughly, and I could not get on the gas, steam poured from the engine bay, driver's side light smasged (got pushed into the battery) but still lights up.

but passenger's side front quarterpanel and lights are OK.

I surveyed the damage pretty extensively with a flashlight. It seems the hood needs to be replaced as well as the radiataor, bumper, and some support beams at the front. The frame does not appear to be bent, although it is not clear. The battery seems to have been pushed back a little (not sure), alternator seems untouched. I think the quarterpanel can be hammered in for now, although the headlight needs to be fixed.

grrr...

So what do you all think is wrong with the car? The collision was only about 10 mph since not even the airbags deployed. I think mainly I went under the SUV and the hood/engine bay was not designed to take impact. I talked to International B on the phone since aparently he had almost the same bad luck as me, except I really want to pay for this damage out of pocket if it's not too damn messed up...

thanks,
Ambert

I'm sure the radiator is cracked, and the steam was coolant. At 10mph I sincerely doubt you did serious damage to the engine or frame.

Heck I slid into a curb at 50+, broke both my axles on one side, and parallel parked between two trees, and the frame wasn't even tweaked. Subie's need much more abuse to bend.

Glad you're not hurt...but from the description, I would bet you're looking at at least $2k in damages. Probably much more considering all the bodywork. But if you're in a touchy insurance situation it might be cheaper to pay yourself.

Did the cops come? Was there a report? You're "supposed" to file that form with the DMV (SR-1 ??) when you have an accident of over $500 damage...so your insurance company will find out if that happens.

Good luck...if there's anything I can help with Sunday...let me know.

i also just got into an accident going pretty fast making a sharp turn. my front right wheel hit the curb and my sway bar is screwed, joints are messed up and broken, part of cb joint came out, and i think part of my frame bent or has some kinda small hole in it. well i didnt totally check it out yet but im going to have a mechanic look at it, but yea accidents suck like hell. hope your car is ok- seems like u need to replace a lot but hopefully the frame is ok. good luck to everyone.

Eric, what do you think is wrong on a hunch? Car can start aparently but I can't press on the accelerator \.

haha thanks Tim, I remember you drove your car off a cliff very clearly, so you came first to my mind when I wanted to call someone

So yeah I thank god the accident was low speed - the airbags did not even deploy (when do they deploy) although I was QUITE shocked so much damage happened at this speed.

Eric, the CHP came to help me push my car to the right shoulder (as well as tell me to crank my car....damn you CHP) but they left. My car is at Prostar towing in Milipitas. I talked to Mike from MPJ last night and I'm going to call Gino today to see about what's up.

Only thing that really sucks is that i missed like the best party EVER last night

How many points is the accident btw? It's 1 or 2 point right? How do they determine that?

Thanks all for offering help. Um, since the car is going to get estimated @ MPJ, I might ask for a ride there sometime

Thanks all, I-club is da shiet, beats any other online/offline community out there,
Ambert

That's like the funniest things I've read on here in a while.

I have no idea what's really wrong, other than the radiator or piping being broken.

Good luck

I didn't swerve out of the way. I think that's how Aaron's accident happened. I just braked, and failed

Does anyone really file that SR 1 accident report form? For those who have, does carfax.com report it after you filed that form to the DMV?
