Goodbye, Car Tax

Today, immediately after taking office as Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenneger repealed the 300% increase in the vehicle license fee.

Whups, sorry for the WTLW-type post, but I think we can all agree that the best part of this good news is that I never had to pay the increased amount.

I was thinking about those folks when I heard the news about the repeal. Agreed, I hope they are in line for a refund. I've heard on National Public Radio this evening that for those people who have received their registration renewal but have not yet sent payment, there will be a information forthcoming about which part may be deducted from the renewal fee.

I dont know, its nice to have to pay less and all but honestly I dont mind paying more if it means they fix the roads. 101 is in such a sad sad shape.

I also don't think its ok to cut any taxes until they've gone over the books. Anytime I think about a tax cut I think about less money going to teachers and fireman, and any other gov't worker.

agreed tide, but there's also the issue of properly spending that money when we are taxed for it, which is sometimes not the case

Not to mention that it was a fairly large part of hi campaign platform and a popular issue with the voters. Though where the hell is he going to get the 4+ billion it would have generated I sure don't know.

Wonder if they will reduce the amount due if I call or go do DMV

There WILL be a refund, and people who havent paid don't have to pay the full ammount anymore.

here's a quote from the Executive Order... "3. The Department of Motor Vehicles is directed to refund to taxpayers all overpayments of vehicle license fees paid since the Director of Finance's letter of June 20, 2003, in excess of the amounts due after taking into account the offset provided by Revenue and Taxation Code section 10754(a)(3)(A)."

and from the DMV website... "Customers who have paid the full amount will automatically receive a refund by mail beginning in early 2004.

Customers who have not already paid their registration renewal may calculate their lower fees by taking the VLF line from the billing notice multiply it by .675 and subtract that amount from the total fees due. Round this figure to the nearest whole dollar.

Submit the new amount by mail to the address on your billing notice:
P.O. Box 94286
Sacramento, Ca 94269-0001"

linky here: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/

too bad I just mailed my registration in last week... can't really cancel a check that's stuck in some DMV clerk's inbox.

russ makes things so hard

the news tonight said just devide your bill by 3 and send that in. If its not correct for some odd reason, they will send you out a new bill, but it should be right

And the fee increase wasn't exclusively for transportation as I understood it - it was to help offset the general state budget shortfall, which would certainly include roads but also a lot of other stuff too...
