Good TV Repairman? Or should I junk it?

So my 32" Sony went black last night, it's about 7 years old and I've been wanting to get a new HDTV for a while.

That being said, I hate to just junk something that I paid 800 for. I called a couple TV repair guys in Mountain View and got crude estimates of 150-300 depending on the problem.

I feel like going to one of those guys without good recommendations is just asking to get totally screwed over ("Oh we took it all apart and it will cost $450...or $100 just to put it back together...or you can just give us this TV and we'll dispose of it for you").

Anyone know any good repair guy that will come to my house in Mtn View and not f*ck me over?

And also...what should I get for <$2k, that's 32" or less ?? muahahahah

you could pull a seinfeld (sp??) and insure the tv for $$$, ship it, and then claim its not working.

then again, thats mail fraud hahaha

I figure with all the tirestem caps you're stealing and selling on Ebay you should be able to get a decent TV set ;0)

You're gonna get killed with repair costs. I take it you dont have those extended warranties. Even so I don't think they go out that far.

Take a look at the Sony XBR 32". My neighbor bought one for her boss (her boss gave her the credit card). It costs a few shiney pennies but OMG, its sweet. yeah "sweet" doesn't really describe picture quailty and progress scan lines and whatever, but it's a real quality set...and bright crisp images. While you're at it buy me one too. thnks!

Eh, what do I know. I just got owned by a bunch of kids on bikes...hahaaaa

its not mail fraud if you use Fed-Ex or UPS

If its ~ 7 years old, its probably not worth the $300 they will probably charge you to repair it.

i'd say just go for a new one...especially if your budget is ~$2000 for a 32"...that will get you a nice TV

Last time I had a tv repaired it took months and months to get fixed, and the cost could have just gone towards a new, not broken tv. suggestioN: get a new one

buy a new TV. I'd try to sell the broken TV. My uncle had a TV repaired and they quoted him the same thing 100-200 depending and guess what it was $200. He probably went to the same shop you are talking about in MT.View.

My Sony 32" went bad a few months ago. It was about 6 year old and was fixed once already. Apparently they have crappy main boards that go bad easily (bad soldering or something). Rather than paying to have it repaired again (and having it go bad 2 years down the road) I just bought another TV.

FYI, save your original remote control and sell it on eBay. It's worth it!

edit: I posted about the sony outlet in Tracy that doesn't exist anymore.
Is that place that sells Sony TVs on Monterey rd. in San Jose still there? San Jose Honda/Sony??
