Good sushi place in SF?
Hey guys,
I want to take my G/F out to the city this weekend for her birthday, and she loves sushi so I was wondering what are some really good Sushi places in downtown? It would be better if it's near Pier 39 or so. Somewhere not extremely fancy, but not a total in and out place.
Thanks in advance,
Oleg

parking is a ***** too
Kitaro's is "ok" at best. It's more of a trendy place than a quality place. There was a place up the street on Geary near 6th or 5th that was pretty good, but for the life of me I can't remember the name. There was a thread about sushi places with good info awhile back....

Thanks a lot for the help guys,

Personally my two favorites are:
1) Toraya at 1914 Fillmore between Bush and Pine (best quality fish hands down)
2) Kabuto on Geary between 15th and 16th Aves.
Enjoy!

if you're looking for good sushi, i wouldn't say ozumo's is that great. they have other dishes that are pretty good and a nice atmosphere... but the sushi itself is ....
however, can't think of any other sushi restuarants in the area you're looking for....

-I would avoid kitaro at all costs.
-Last time I've been to ebisu, it was crap (about 7 years ago)
-Don't bother going to blowfish unless you like Japanese-American fusion.
-I've been to Kabuto, it was decent at best.
-Murasaki is above average (clement), but the sushi is either a hit or miss.
-I've heard good stuff about KISS sushi in Jtown, but you'll need to make reservations.
-I haven't been to the other places mentioned in the thread.
Now, if you want excellent traditional sushi, I would realy recommend Sushi Ko in Larkspur, about a 15 min drive from SF across the GG bridge. Make sure to sit at the bar. Very good selection of fish and sake.
Oh, don't bother going to Sushi Ran. Over hyped. Over rated. Waste of $$$

My 2 cents...
1. Kitaro is lousy. I don't even consider it to be Japanese food there.
2. How the mighty have fallen. Ebisu and Kabuto live on in name only. I caught an Ebisu sushi chef fiddling with pocket change whilst preparing sushi (and not to be racist, but several of the sushi chefs there aren't Japanese), and Kabuto gave me a rotten piece of saba before (it sucks because I was jr. high classmates with the owner's two sons).
3. Takara in Japantown's Miyako Mall has top class sushi, but the service can be horrendous. I've boycotted them for life because of all the insult that they have heaped on me.
4. ***u Sushi is good, but not great. The fish is fresh but not of the best cut/grade, and the nigiri size is a wee bit too small (it's left the realm of delicate and entered the realm of anorexia).
5. From my Japanese friends, Tanuki on California and 6th and Tekka on Balboa and 16th(?) are top class, but I haven't had a chance to go out and try them myself yet.
6. Shimo 2 on Taraval and about 16th is a tasty, barebones neighborhood style Japanese restaurant. Fish is almost always very fresh, good quality, and large (but not Americanized) portions.
7. Kuishinbo in Japantown's Miyako Mall has tasty cooked food, but I haven't had a chance to go back and try their sushi yet.
8. Ozumo has great cooked food, but the sushi's only okay I've heard.
9. According to a Japanese friend, Tokyo Go Go is tasty but inauthentic. To her, it was like going to an Americanized Japanese restaurant; hence, it was more of a novelty to her than anything (she's been here for only 9 months).

I actually dig Kitaro but I'm that one white dude sitting in the corner trying to say nigiri without offending anyone.
I have to say the place on 5th or something and geary is tastes like man @ss (i've heard) i went there with my boss and was choking on the seaweed, WOULD NOT GO DOWN!!!
A friend who I trust says this place on 9th and Irving is really good too.
YMMV.
cheers

Ok guys, I decided to take her to Ozumo so we were there tonight, and I'd rate it a 9.5/10. The food was good, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was just perfect. It's somewhat expensive, but it's well worth it, in my opinion. The girlfriend loved it too.
Thanks for the help guys, and I'll probably go check out the other places you guys mentioned sometime soon.
