If it's an engagement ring, the suggestion these days it to spend 2-3 months salary on the ring. Don't be a cheap ***, she'll remind you of that the rest of your life. I spent $3k on my wife's first ring and just upgraded it to a 1.5ct D/IF for 10 years of having a ball and chain, which you DO NOT want to know how much it cost.

If it's just something to be cute, look on ebay, lots of decent stuff there, but personally I wouldn't cheap out regardless of the occasion.

The reason for that is because in Asia, people love as pure gold as they can get. My girlfriend has 3 pieces that are 24k gold and she's proven it to me by showing how pliable they are.

As for in America, people don't care about the pureness and want their jewelery to be sturdier. As long as it's "real" gold with a diamond that's all that matters. I say "real" because while it is gold, it has a lot of other stuff in it as well to make it harder.

The Gift Center in the city. My mom gets a majority of her jewlery there along with watches and what not as presents for people. They have a great selection.

Check out Zales. We got my wifes engagement ring, wedding band (mine too) and some diamond earrings from them. Always been happy.

Check out this page:

http://www.zales.com/search/index.js...7CUnder+%24100

Their website represents what you'll find in the store and you can get a diamond for $99
