just wait until the coolant and oil start leaking from the block... in two different locations...

AVG time is usually just over 8hr's my best time in just under 6hr. and 1 stop for gas is all it takes...it you're traveling at night you usually don't have to worry about CHP

I just did the trip to vegas this past weekend.

I logged in 1700 miles (but I took the scenic route).

Regardless of the route you take: check for construction online.

Even on the 15, I was practically parked for an hour. I saw construction on a lot of highways.

It may seriously save you guys to check where and when roads will be closed or delayed.

BE sure to do all the common sense stuff: check oil, tire pressure, and make sure your coolant is topped off.

like what gilmore25 said, a little over 8hrs is about avg. i did it once in about 9hrs. i was really taking my time and i had a pit stop every hour to pee.

6 hrs was setting land speed records. i had a lot of records on that run. records include: longest time above 100mph, most times hitting rev limiter, longest time at WOT (i believe i was at WOT for over 5 minutes going up 15), most energry drinks consumed (don't ever bring energy drinks as a form of water) in 7 hours, and of course most lifes endangered.

How steep is the climb from Bakersfield into the mohave desert and then again from Baker to the tip of mountains, before you go down into vegas?

I see an elevation gain for 2500ft on 58 getting into the desert.

Then from like an average 3000ft, you dip down to like 1000ft in Baker, to then hit 4700ft at a summit, and then fall into the las vegas area.

What I can't figure out easily is the distances. I think the climb on 58 is over about a 40 mile stretch, so not so bad. But that last climb after baker looks really short, and I don't want to over load the car... We have at our disposal, higher HP cars, like my RS and Daniel's WRX. But my car eats a little more gas than the saturn, and Daniels car will be chugging gasoline down , so we'd like to stick to the saturn.

This isn't a race, guys. It's simply a drive down to Vegas. HP has very little to do with it.

I had a 1987 Nissan Pulsar which I used to drive that route at least 4 times/yr. with, and with the amazing 97 crank HP, it still made it with no problems.

You'll have no problem with the hills they aren't that bad, the Tehachapi pass is the worse one and in the saturn I rented one time 80+ wasn't a problem

I'll throw out another option : Take 5 south, then exit on Seventh Standard Road. 7th Std is between 58 and 46, and has fewer stops (and less traffic) than either one. Definitely the FASTEST of all the ways to go.

Second option would be 46. You really DO NOT wanna do either 58 or Stockdale, tons of stoplights either way.

Worst hill is Tehachapi, it tops out at 4200 ft or so. You might have to downshift in the loaded Saturn, but that's about it...should still easily be able to maintain the speed limit (or a little more ) up the hill.
