honestly...i don't think it'll matter. no more schmidt means we have no ace. zito would be too expensive i think (for how inconsistent he can be). i think maddux would have made a good fit here. oh well.

Go after Zito but on a long term contract... then save the rest of the money and go after a few free agents next year.

Over pay for Zito and make a trade for Manny.
I am an A's fan, and I know Zito is good. However, he has been declining ever since he won the CY Young in 2002. Keep in mind he had one of the worst ball to strike ratios in the league last year. With Ted Lilly pulling down $10mil a year, expect to pay Zito a min of $15mil for a 3 - 5 year deal.
ManRam is a good hitter, if a team can get Boston to lower its demand and pay a part of the $34mil he is due over the next 2 years, it would be worth making the deal.
