Getting to SF with a bike in the morning question.

Hey all.

As some of you know, I tend to ask i-club when I need a question answered and you guys are batting 1000.

Question: How does one in the east bay get to work in SF in the morning with a bike? are there special trains in the morning for bart that will let you take a bike? ...or is bart a loser that doesn't care about bikers in the morning and bans them on all trains to SF?

Are there other ways that will let you take a bike with you across the bay?

There are only certain trains that will allow bikes in the morning during certain hours. I know the big commuter lines like the Yellow Line (Pittsburg/ Bay Point) do not allow bikes during commuting hours.

BART - Bikes on BART

Cal Trans offers a bike commuter service shuttle where they drive you into the city in a van with your bike on a trailer. Cost is $1.00

I take BART in the mornings from Pittsburg/Bay Point and in the early afternoon just fine.

The bike shuttle is rocking! Sometimes it's full though and then you would have to wait 40-60 minutes for the next one. Pick up is MacArthur BART.

ugh... i'm so confused when it says no bikes allowed... but bikes must get off on Embarcadero... so are they allowed or not? :oints:: reason why bay area mass transit is redic. IT'S RAN BY IDIOTS!

It's totally confusing. That and the low cost of the bike shuttle made that decision easy. You meet some fun people on the shuttle too and the driver used to be a real character. Bikes are banned from some trains and some stations at certain times. So if you get on a train that allows them at a station that they are allowed and get off at Embarcadero, then you're golden.

Eh I think CalTrain won't give you **** if you use their bike-specific cars.

fack

too bad there isn't, but I hope you manage to find a proper BART train that will have room for your bike.

Speaking of bike cars in train systems, besides CalTrain, it seems other public transportation systems and vehicles don't seem to have very many (sometimes none at all) bike rack slots. I hope in the future, more will appear for cyclists to have an easier commute.

The only way to take BART into the city or out of the city during commute hours is with a folding bike. I love mine, even though I take Hayward to MacArthur which allows bikes anyways. However, I can fold it, sit at the end of the car with the bike folded up in the aisle way like a piece of luggage and laugh at the guys with the full size bikes trying to maneuver them. I wished BART had a bike specific car oh yeah, you can store it under your desk at work too muahaha

Yes, I used to take the Alameda/Oakland Ferry to Embarcadero every morning with my bike.

You just have to wait to get on last and you have to put your bike in the bike racks outside on the deck.

Plus side of taking the ferry? They have a full bar on board.

The only bike you ride should have an engine. But if you don't have a motorcycle I've noticed that BART doesn't really enforce the "no bicycles" rule.
