How do you know that one of the employee's gave her son the "stolen" laptop? Do you guys have any "tracking" software by chance to send out a broadcast to one of your servers to give the IP address because of the newly updated location?

Sorry, but start looking for a new job, your days are numbered. Or move back to the Bay Area and ride this one out.

Most people who steal laptops usually format the drive before any type of tracking software would be used.

So, next chapter in the getting screwed saga:

I sent him a email requesting the SAC project. I just stated the fact that I thought it made sense to have a SysAdmin that works in the SAC office be familiar with the servers that will reside there. He always rides us for not taking on new projects and I said that I would love the opportunity to work on this project.

I took a day off on Friday...

That day, he sent out an email to the department saying that he hired a "consultant" to help out in the SAC office while I am in the Bay Area...

Still have not heard back from him on the project request.

Thinking it's not worth sticking it out for the 401k...

I just don't want them to win, because I get the feeling that they are trying to force me out, too...

Oh and the computers were definitely stolen. We have tracking software that will survive a drive format, but they have not turned up, yet.

Just to throw my 2 cents out there, I'd agree with the people who say they are likely trying to force you out. Just start looking for another job and if something comes up, take it.

Corporations suck. good luck man.

Well I know it could be accomplished by using a simple program you could create in Visual Basics that sends out a broadcast to a server announcing the IP Address. I *think* IBM might have this type of software available on certain laptops. Heres a Google search, I just found out its more popular than I thought:

You'll be suprised by the amount of idiots that do this as well, and dont know what reformatting is. I'm betting 1/3 of them are the same people who steal cellphones.

True. There are lots of idiots out there. Assuming that the partitions have been formatted then removed you are pretty much SOL. Anyways ... best of luck to Ryball
