Getting screwed at work...

And not the good kind...

Okay, fair warning: this is a *****ing thread, so if you don't want to hear it, leave now.

A little back ground: I am a Systems Admin and have been with the company almost 5 years.

Two years ago I bought a house in Elk Grove and started splitting time between the Bay Area and our Sacramento office. I kinda stopped doing real Systems Admin stuff and started to have to handle mostly desktop crap.

This week, my boss pulled my Sac days. Saying basically, I was on probation because of a complaint and that I will need to be in the Bay Area 5 days a week for the next 90 days.

All because someone who thinks she's important didn't get her laptop quick enough. Sorry, I though getting replacement computers for the three people who's computers got stolen so they could actually work was more of a priority that getting someone their new pretty laptop... guess I was wrong.

So today, I am on a conference call for our department meeting and my boss says we have two new MIS people. One is a helpdesk person and the other is a new Systems Admin. His first job will be to rebuild the 5 disaster recovery servers in the Sacramento office...

...

...

...

hmm... let's see... there is a huge Systems Admin project in Sacramento... we have a Systems Admin that LIVES in Sacramento...

...

...

...let's hire a new person and give HIM the ******* project. Let's make Ryan continue to drive 100 miles each way 5 days a weeks so that he can take BART for another 45 minutes each way to cover our SF and Oakland offices...

That sounds like an excellent idea.

AAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggg gggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

I am so mad I can't even see straight.

******* retarded bastard... what a ****.

personally here is what I think.

You work for a corporation> They treat everyone like **** and have aweful problem solving skills and like to waste money.

Now.....if you have direct contact with the guy that is in charge of the new people and what not...he's your boss..etc. I'd send him an email asking for a chance to have your probation thoroughly explained to you..it is your right. And to discuss some things with him.

Tell him you feel like after 5 years of great service one complaint should be causing this much grief and explain your side of the complaint situation. Then tell him you live in sacramento and do not understand why you are not being put on the big sacramento project and why hiring someone knew that has no idea how you guys operates is a better idea than putting someone that's been dedicated to the company there.

If that does nothing...I'd suggest going on monsterjobs.com, craigslist.com and checking the job listings for SBC (sbc if you're desperated..haaa. I work there)

Get your resume out there. Maybe even get a couple of interviews going. Then come back to your boss with the offer sheets and explain to him that you feel overlooked, mistreated and recieve little respect for what you do and that if he can not seem to fit you into their plans and get you into a more favorable situation...you'll be gone in a couple weeks and will not have time to train the new dick head.

Seems they like to get you to do that....train someone new to do your job then lay you off. Or in my case...design 4 binders worth of covers and help build/design my way out of a job.

Good luck....I am still stuck here damn near 7 years later...and I really want out.haa.

Oh and in an office like that, if you walk in with offer letters trying to play hardball, you'll be fired so fast it will make your head spin. ;(

wrongful termination. Plus they don't like to fire people...they end up having to pay their unemployment.

and I didn't say go in there and be an *******. You are mearly informing them that you have been and will be looking elsewhere until you are treated with some respect. Being forced to commute 6 hours a day for 3 months because of a single complaint is bull****. You could probably file a complaint based purely on that.

I mean we have jack asses like that, that think you need to serve them now or else. If I get a complaint I talk to my director and I tell him...well I understand she is important and what not. But her deal is worth $150k...do you really want me to shelf $40 million in projects to make sure one person is happy? I usually explain how I have several projects in process with approaching deadlines from people that gave us proper time to complete their projects. Dropped one in with a rediculous time line at this point would jeoperdize the other projects. If you want it completed I'll need overtime...or she will have to wait a couple more days and she'll get all of my attention for a prompt completion with quality work.

They CAN NOT fire you for looking at other opportunities.

Yes but they could fire him for the complaint against him. Sure it might be shady. Don't underestimate employers if you back them into a corner.

To me it sounds like they're trying to force him out. There is no other reason to keep making him drive.

that is what I was thinking too. Try to make him go through torture and finally quit...that way they are not on the books to pay is unemployment....people do this all the time.

Sheesh...small and big. I worked at this gas station years ago. Had this one guy that just was a moron and my boss hated him but didn't want to pay his lazy *** unemployement so he wouldn't fire him. So he gave me more control and then slowly started giving me more hours. Guy eventually quit.

Might want to check into the discipline clauses in your contract man. I know we have very strict discipline avenues that must be followed within reason. I mean you can be fired for one thing but it's gotta be kinda serious. Like 8 hour days of **** watching or picking up hookers in a work vehicle.

true stories man...

one guy got trailed by corporate investigators and got busted picking up hookers in his work van.

The guy that had my position in houston...oh man. Guy used to play for the Packers. Huge guy. defensive end..anyways. Guy was running a **** website and "escort" service site while AT work. Gof tired quick like..haaa.

My old boss...pretty consirvative artsy lady. Really sweet. Got contacted by corporate security. Someone was watching **** from her computer. Turns out we had some account folks in the building at the time and they were logging into her computer and doing it so they wouldn't get busted....he got canned.

EDIT....oh...and as for other stuff.. I could get seriously busted or fired for being on a forum while working...or no work related sites period....lets just say when it's slow here....I'd fire myself.

The whole thing seems to have happened too fast. Wouldn't there be proper steps taken before being placed back on probation? Verbal and such? Were there other complaints or issues before that? It seems like an extreme step to be placed on probation for one incident.

Filing a complaint won't do much, it could will fix things short time, but once your boss get another excuse you are caned.

I had the same thing happen to me. After my old boss and I got in an argument he tried to cut my hours to force me out. So I called the human resource department to complaint about him. When I first spoke to the human resource department they already had a file on me and almost everyone else at work. Its like they are prepared to fire anybody. But once I told them that my boss was cutting my hours without my permission, they were kissing my ***.

After a few moths later our entire department got laid off, including my boss. (happy ending)

If you file a complaint against your boss don’t be surprised that your human resource department already knows who you are. Your boss probably has a file against you already.

What can I say, work politics sucks.
Good luck with your situation.
