I would respectfully disagree with you. The '02-'07 Impreza was much much uglier IMHO.
I would hardly call Subaru the "innovator of rally". While they certainly did some innovative things, most of the other manufacturers were right there doing it with them. Audi on the other hand...

I was refering to Subaru as being only known & popular after getting into rally, before that it was Subawho? It's is soul man & the newer ones stray further & further away. They were very innovated, had to be, with all those rally/WRC championships they won. We may never see that era for Subaru ever again, so get your 03-07 STi while you still can!
Nah, i'm just talking about car companies who usually don't or never make sporty rwd vehicles, they try to break into that niche brand, only to run for a few years max. Just ask Hyundai about that, their Genesis flopped man. They tried sooo hard to appeal to us tuner crowd with a rwd turbo coupe, but you can't fool us with only 200 hp, c'mon with ****ing boost, what a joke! A Civic Si has that much power & it's only NA man! So you see, if specific car manufacturers don't regularly produce rwd, then it'll just be a fad at that particular time, i don't see Subaru making this for too long, lacking awd & turbo, their core technologies, oh & four doors-lol.

Have you seen Hyundai's Veloster & Ford's Fiesta rallycross cars, pretty awesome. They look hella good & have monster awd power, unlike Subaru's ugly wagon. They need to wake up & start looking around at the competition, cuz the innovator of rally is getting left behind man.
A sports car needs to be quick in the turns. You're forgetting that you don't need a lot of power if you have a light weight car. You're right about Subaru losing some of their uniqueness, but they're a company that wants to appeal to more people. Unfortunately that generally means making things more mainstream and losing some of that uniqueness.

^ That's pretty interesting. If it's not turbocharged, the engine is going to need a lot of changes. I can see the STI version having larger brakes and rotors, wider tires, a more aggressive suspension setup, and maybe even being lighter than the normal model.

All I'm hoping for is that it'll be reminiscent of the old Impreza 2.5RS or perhaps the Subaru Alcyone/XT/Vortex.
If Subaru makes this an AWD entry-level sporty car, I will be very very happy.
Making it turbocharged will only cannibalize WRX and STI sales.
Making it RWD will anger fans.
To me, AWD + naturally-aspirated FB engine making decent power and torque = win for this car if it does happen.
EDIT: Oh, but it better damn well have a proper manual transmission!

RWD will not anger fans, especially in a lower power car. Don't need the weight.
I'll tell you right now buddy, there is NO AWD, NOT HAPPENING. Read about subarus concept that was at the autoshow, a body-less display of the drivetrain, and speil on their specially built blah blah for RWD.
Subaru designed new drivetrain parts to make this rwd, they will not be making an awd.
"We’re sure if Subaru’s version of the car will be sold in the United States, which has a little upset. Subaru expects a longer-than-aveage lifecycle for the model and it plans on keeping things fresh with a possible STI version shortly after launch, said Toshio Masuda, a Subaru senior general manager of product planning.
Subaru’s STI department is known for beefing up a vehicles performance with the use of turbocharging, performance tires, powerful brakes and a sport-tuned suspension. However, officials say that going turbo for the rear-wheel-drive sports car is doubtful since the original plan calls for keeping the boxer engine naturally aspirated"
