This is one of those things, specifically the water pump, where you don't want anything but OEM. If you have to get back in there again because of a leaking pump, any money saved just went out the window.

Or a failed tensioner or idler pulley taking your engine out

again i'd be surprised if a subaru dealer would sell these parts if there had been more than 1 instance of a customer reporting a problem with any of it , appreciate the feedback for sure though, i'll definitely give the parts a strong comparison during the swap , 'someone' makes a lot of these parts for subaru and subaru puts a hell of a markup on them, i bought a $24 knock sensor off ebay last week and put it on my 2000 outback and it cleared the p0328 immediately , the dealer wanted around $100 bucks for the same part

I am sure it will work fine. Will it last another 100K before it should be done again? Who knows. Will you still have the car for another 100K? Probably not.

Like I even said in my first post...its offered in our online store only. We don't install these at our facility, only OEM parts and/or you have the option of upgraded timing belt/guide at time of 105k service.

Off topic but speaking of such things, I checked out your website after reading this thread. Pretty cool stuff, but one thing I did notice was the potential to upgrade from a 10mm to 11mm pump; is that something worth considering when swapping pumps?

I am in the process of sourcing all of the needed parts to do the timing belt because it looks like i have a cam seal leak. with that said, after reading all of what the tuners chiming in have said, am I to understand that the Gates Racing Timing belt kits are not OEM/OEM quality and only buying Subaru Stamped Parts/ OEM Subaru parts is the right thing to do? I know that when it comes to the cam seals I will be buying them from the dealer.

Most of the time OE replacement parts are ok. However, I've seen a couple cars with failed timing belt tensioners and idler pulleys and of course they were not OEM. That was enough for me to switch to OEM only parts for those components. The extra couple hundred bucks are well worth it when your engine is at stake.

Parts arrived yesterday. The tensioner is NTN , the belt is Gates, duh! , and the idlers and belt gears are Koyo and NSK. They are 3 of the largest bearing manufacturers supplying parts to OEM car and heavy equipment manufacturers all over the world.

I have no doubt that these are all high quality parts. I suppose the biggest thing you lose not buying these parts from Subaru is all of the work Subaru does analyzing failure rates across the various manufacturers , which is significant. Obviously Subaru would know if a particular bearing from vendor A is problematic. They would either work with the vendor to correct the issue or switch to another supplier. I can't tell who makes the water pump. It will be interesting to pull the old parts and see who makes them, more to follow when I get around to tearing it down.

I believe the water pump is Yamada.

::: Yamada Manufacturing Co., Ltd. / Product Information :::

You can see the turbo Subaru water pump in the bottom picture in the link.

There are a lot of misinterpretations of OE and OEM. A OEM is the Original Equipment Manufacturer. OEM make OE parts made and designed to original specs. OEM also makes aftermarket parts. Aftermarket parts are any part that isn't an exact replica of the Original Equipment. Many aftermarket parts are better, or designed to perform better than OE because problems have been addressed and corrected. When parts are updated at dealerships, they are generally being replaced with aftermarket designs made by the OEM.
