Gates Timing Belt Kit Ordered

It will be here Friday, anyone want to help do a timing belt change this weekend? : )

The kit was $239 shipped which was the cheapest I could find , the same kit from Fred Beans was $345 plus shipping. I confirmed it is the DOHC kit, not SOHC. It includes:

(1) - Timing Belt
(1) - Hydraulic Tensioner
(4) - Idlers
(1) - Water pump
(1) - Water pump gasket

That's VERY cheap! Hopefully those are quality idlers and tensioner!

I think the only thing Gates Racing is the timing belt it self. Everything else should be oe quality level replacement parts, not OEM parts. Unless they changed some things.

Where did you get the kit at?

I might be able to help you depending on where you're located and if i'm not busy.

pho shizzle is dead on with this.

Remember the term OE and OEM are not the same. The huge cost savings on these kits over OEM is almost every aspect of it (the water pumps are not even close to OEM quality from what I have seen but we ONLY install OEM stuff here at LIC).

we offer these kits in our online store as well and $239 is dirt cheap, don't know how folks can offer stuff like this so cheap...

^^^ they most likely bought way too many units and now have to pay bills. So they sell things under cost to at least get some money back. Or it's stolen

i'm in san jose off meridian and minnesota/alma, i've done one before on the sohc motor, i remember it was a lot of time but not all that hard, the part of the job i'd love a second set of eyes/hands on is fitting the new belt making sure it's aligned properly , if you or anyone else could pop over and help with that it would be cool, i'll tear everything down to that point and put it all back together after

These kits are ****; leaky water pumps, idlers that make noise/seize up.
The most expensive part is the tensioner(made in only one factory in Japan) which is OEM.

Good luck with all that....

Agreed with you on this one too. The tensioner is factory.

Like I even said in my first post...its offered in our online store only. We don't install these at our facility, only OEM parts and/or you have the option of upgraded timing belt/guide at time of 105k service.

I hope it's not crap , I put some faith in that Fred Beans wouldn't sell crap , Gates has been around a long time too. I'm all about oem part quality but Subaru parts are pricey compared to other car manufacturers. If it looks like **** when I have the old parts off and can compare them I'll have to make some decisions.
