So you thought that gas prices would drop???
That's pure comedy...when the big oil companies pay less for oil, they don't pass the savings on to the people, they make GREATER PROFITS!!!
Mass production and big business are #1 in the USA, everything else is baggage!
LOL
(BTW, invading afghanistan allowed us to ensure construction of an oil pipeline through there and avoid building it in iran)

puh-leeze... of course one of the major reasons for the war was control of oil. and at <$2.50/gallon, we're still paying FAR less for gasoline than most of the world. oil fields in iraq, exploratory drilling in alaska, etc. are all excuses for delaying development of alternative technologies... once again, it took the success of the japanese auto makers to wake up america's big three...
i say we add another two to three dollars to the price of gasoline and use the money to improve mass & alternative transit and fund research into new techologies. the higher cost of gasoline will also take a lot of cars off the road - especially the big wasteful kinds!
how many hummers do you think you'd see if they had to pay $6/gallon?

I think i've seen this movie...."Clear and Present Danger", right!? when that covert team aims the AN/PVS6 MELIOS on the the cali cartels home?
And this would be "Black hawk down", right? When that spy drives the car with the giant "X" on the top?
LOL Seriously, You have some good ideas for the most part. We've talked about this before an i believe you're on the right track. However, we're still paying $2.00+ a gallon! When's the maddess going to end Dre?
Eric

Didnt even think of the relations to the movies mentioned haha
I'm not sure what you mean by "success" by the Japanese, I don't see too many Honda Insights or Toyota Prius' on the road, and you still have the battery technology issue with those two. I'm not trying to knock your point, I just wish the technology was there to support an alternative fuel source. If you want to check out some cool stuff, check out http://www.drivingthefuture.org/ you can take a tour (I went to the Mercedes research portion of the center with a friend's car club) and get a ride in some of the concept vehicles. Until the public's perception that "cheaper is better" is somehow changed, alternative fuels are going to have a tough time winning a market segment. Unfortunately, I think even if the cost of gasoline was raised, we would still see huge SUV's everywhere.

how many cars would you see at $6 a gallon. Come on man.
American's see less per gallon because we buy more gallons. Most of the cost is taxes any how.
Shoot man at $2.31 a gallon (what I paid yesterday) I am going to have to cut back how much I drive. $35 a tank. Shoot.
You really think that raising the cost to $6 a gallon is going to expidite the process for natural or more environment friendly fuels? You must believe in the posibility of a utopian society as well.
Oil is way way to large a money maker. Big business funds major political players. Major political players control taxes.
But even going past all this. The american public has been raised on having cars at our disposal. Since Ford....a car in every garage 100 years ago. Not only that, throughout the history of the automobile we have had an interest in going faster. More power. Luckily with the push of global need and foreign car makers we have also included environment friendly into the equation.
So show me an electric car that can do the quarter mile in 13 seconds or drive from Los Angeles to Seattle in one trip and I'll show you a larger market. Right now electric cars can't drive long enough trips and don't offer enough flexibility. You think an electronic SUV would go 70mph for 450miles? Then fill up and do it all over again..hell no. have to sit there over night and do it the next day and you could only do half that distance.
Hydro cars, hybrid cars, electric cars, solar cars, etc...etc.
They don't have the flexibility or customization abilities to have mass market appeal. If they were funded more would they by now? Hard to say. Will they ever? Hard to say.
I think there is a great market for electric vehicles.......in places like SF where you don't have to drive but 15-30 miles to get all your errands done. Or an old couple that makes trips to down every now and again. Stuff like that.
But for someone like me that makes trips to the snow...easily will drive several hundred miles in any given weekend it's just not gonna happen. Maybe not for 20 years...maybe not in this life time.

damn you must pile up the miles about as fast as I do.
I have 14k miles on my car and I picked it up the second week of august with 10 miles on it.
Hurts me every time I looked on it. That new car feeling wore off way to fast. Maybe some new wheels will do the trick of bringing that back for a little while.

No matter what gas prices are, I still have to pay it because otherwise I would be unemployed (60 mile commute per day) It's just another bill......

edgar,
uhm, i believe gas has been decreased by 10% therefore in a economical point of view, price goes up due to demand, and inelasticity and all that crap that is taught in econ....but it all sums up how the prices went up 10% due to the 10% decrease in amt.

it's around $2.50 in SF. At this rate, it's going up to $3.00 soon :/
