this happened to me yesterday. I was going to work (7 miles) and my gas light was on, then on the way home I was to high to stop for gas. Next morning my car wouldn't start. I tried again and it started, i drove 20mph to the nearest gas station. I'm filling up from now on.

depends on what kind of car you drive. my old wrx i would usually have like 2 gallons left when the light went on. on my 4 runner the light comes on and i still have like 5 gallons left

on my old '02 WRX, when the gas light would come on, you could drive for a while (maybe 30 miles or so), and the tank needle would dip a bit below the "Empty" line.
with my STi, one time after a fillup (I left the key in the on position, not running, during the fillup), my gas needle didn't even go up at all!! I had to turn the car off and on again to get the needle to rise.
I have nearly run out of gas several times due to how unpredictable the needle is when the light goes on. At a needle position above the "Empty" line, sometimes I can drive it for, say, 20 miles, other times it will run out of gas.
I've limped to gas stations at least 3 times with the engine almost stalling.
Now I fill 'er up once it hits the 1/4 mark!

Probably depends on how your drive after the "idiot light"
goes on.
If you go pick races, well then, probably not too far. If you ease her around and try to stay off th' boost, probably another 20ish miles or so. The furthest I went with the idiot light on was a little over 10 miles (thank God for the gas station heh).
