I was looking at HID flashlights last night for the fun of it and the Surefire "The Beast" light is the biggest ripoff in the history of lights. How much does it cost, you ask? For a 2000 lumen light, which is damn impressive since the Borealis has 1050, you have to pay $4,200 and thats on the low side!
That wasn't a typo, they want OVER $4000 DOLLARS for the flashlight!
There are other makers of HID flashlights that totally rival the Surefire light in light output, ruggedness, run time and you save $3000 dollars by getting one! Not only that, but some of the HID lights that rival "the beast" are very small and much more portable and practical then the beast! When you buy Surefire you're paying mostly for the name that is stamped onto the product. Don't get me wrong, I think surefire lights are AMAZING, but there are lights out there that are JUST AS amazing for a fraction of the cost. Like this:
The Beast: $4,200+ (Max Output: HID - 2300 lumens - 12 lumens for the map light) It may not look very big in the photo but it still weighs 4.5lbs! Its pretty comparible to the light pictured below the beast.

Comparable HID light, though not AS portable, but it has 3,200 lumens
and cost $399

(I've used this guy when I was hanging out with Nick (president) and Alex (i-club). The thing is insanely bright and focused! It used to cost over $1000 a few years ago, It's not THAT big either.
Here's a much smaller and portable HID light:
3500 Lumens, rehcargable, very portable, and only costs $539! Take THAT surefire!

As you can see, I will never spend my money on Surefire when I know there are other lights out there that fit the deed at a MUCH more cost effective way.
My next flashlight will probably be the 35W 3500 lumen with one hour run time--MicroFire Samurai-III K3500R 35W HID Rechargeable Flashlight Kit like pictured above. I don't know anyone stupid enough to buy the surefire for $4,200!

Someone used to make an HID kit that fit into a Mag... I wanted that so bad. I don't think they make it anymore.
I wanted this 10W HID, but no $$$

This is the end all of flashlights, 3000 lumens. Thankfully I don't have to pay for them, Uncle Sam does. No more need for the old AN/PED Laser Designators. Just shine this thing where you want the bombs and that's where they'll go. We don't use ours with white light however, IR filters over everything.

Like I mentioned earlier, I've been drooling over SureFire's "The Beast" HID light for some time now... Years even, but the $4,299+ price tag makes me laugh... Its not just expensive, its RIDICULOUS! Beyond ridiculous! Maybe if it was the only HID flashlight that existed and it had 6000lumens, but its not and it doesnt!
This is why I have a serious hard on for the MicroFire Warrior III HID light which has a review written about it here:

Just check out those beam shots and you'll be sold!
How much does it cost? $4000? No $3000? No... $2000?, No... $1000??? Nope!
It's friggin a little over $500! You heard me!
I must have it!

Dude! Screw making a light when you can get the Microfire Warrior III! Sure, it's $500 but its WELL worth it... It'll be brighter than ANY other flashlight you've ever seen, super rugged, and well, its a m f'ing HID! 3,600 Lumens!
I can't even begin to fathom how bright that really is!
I think my Borealis is INSANE, this thing is OVER 3x brighter! I once pissed off a police helicopter one night in San Jose with my Borealis... I know that they got mad because they went from searching about a mile away from me, then their spotlight moves really quickly and focuses on me!
I was scared ****less!
Hhahahha, good times... Now imagine if I used the HID Mircofire?

I would not be the least bit surprised. I don't bother to worry about the prices of our stuff because its so inflated. God knows what the Army pays for them. Not to mention the IR filter is probably sold seperately for some rediculous price.
That said, get one of the TerraLux drop-in's:
