You need a soft start or regulated driver... or let your batteries rest off the charger for a day before you use it.

Yeah, I know... Black Bear recommends waiting 30 mins before using the light once it's done charging, but I usually wait a couple hours now just to play it safe after having gone through about 6 bulbs! Actually, my light is sitting in my room with a burned out bulb as I type this

I probably won't play with it again until I can afford that regulated driver. It is just such a uselessly awesome light.
I've been too engrossed in LED's and EDC sized stuff. I ended up getting that Nitecore D10 and LOVE it. Perfect size. Great UI. http://www.4sevens.com/product_info....roducts_id=709
I am also looking at Mag LED dropin's because I have so many Mag's laying around - http://www.malkoffdevices.com/shop/d...te-c-1_25.html
I love the 2-3 C-cell form factor.
edit: HOLY JEYSOOS, I can't believe how much Black Bear charges.

Thanks to the automotive industry, the price of HID's is falling and falling!

Also, in regards to the price of a Black Bear 1050 Borealis... Yeah, the $300ish price tag is steep but you're getting a really high quality light with AMAZING performance. I'm into LEDs big time, like you, but there's something you get out of a standard xenon bulb that's producing the kind of output that the borealis is... The light is sooo useable and since it's not colored or tinted like most LEDs are these days (read: MOST), the applications are endless... Well, applications that require an INSANE amount of light.
I assume you have a 1050 based on your earlier post, so you know of the sort of quality that goes into each of their lights... Just the battery pack alone is bad ***!
I love the fact that it's like a light saber and can burn people with it's beam alone! Hold it close to someone and shine it right at their skin for what we call "Insta-burn", or "Getting Light Sabered"... My friends and I would burn each other and have battles...
The 1050 is not just a light, but its a friggin defense weapon, BIG TIME!
If I was a cop and was working the streets, I'd totally ditch my Maglite and go with a Borealis 1050. My friend Ray adopted a 1050 after some rave reviews from me and he couldn't be any happier with it. The amount of throw and light that it puts on whatever area you're putting it on is just insane. It's almost too bright where you can't use it in most every day applications due to the amount of reflected light that comes back at you. An example of using the 1050 incorrectly is to use it for your basic illumination when you get up in middle of the night to use the bathroom or something... Turning that thing on when your eyes aren't adapted to bright lights is actually painful... It's not just bright to your eyes, but it actually hurts your eyes!
I wouldn't use this light indoors unless you were in some huge building like Costco. For outdoor use only!!!
I love the fact that you can start fires with it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCrwelQUTMc
It's seriously one of the BEST camping tools you can possibly have. When I go to remote areas I always bring the following items:
1. Borealis 1050 lumen flashlight / firestarting light saber (no joke, see video above)
2. Glock entrenching tool (Folds up into a compact little rectangle/square that fits into a handy little pouch, but unfolds to reveal a large handle saw and sturdy shovel that also acts as a hammer and blade.

3. Ka-Bar fighting knife, which is ideal for cutting large things, and although it's called a fighting knife it also makes a great digging/cutting/utility knife, especially with D2 Tool steel.

4. Emergency blanket, wool socks, and other items that keep me warm.
5. Misc items like backup flashlights, nails, tape, etc.
With just the flashlight and entrenching tool you're pretty much set up for whatever you have to do.
The rest of the stuff I bring out is just bonus stuff.

Xmas is coming up and although I hate asking for stuff, but I really want to get a decent HID flashlight that produces in the area of 3,000 lumen and is portable enough to carry without any extra batter packs or ballasts hanging off. Have any recommendations in the $400 range? I figured you might know of a light with 3k output and with decent battery life.

I can build one for like $180. I built my "Mag85" as they are commonly known which is probably identical to your Borealis. BY NO MEANS am I trying to knock you Borealis. It is an awesome light. I just think for nearly $100 less and the satisfaction in knowing you built it yourself, someone that is looking at the 1050 can have the same thing.
Check out the Polarions. http://www.polarion-store.com/cat_polarion.cfmOtherwise, hand-held... maybe the Wolf Eyes Boxer? http://www.pts-flashlights.com/produ...px?uid=1-17-74 But that is not going to get you the lumens you want.
That Stanley I posted earlier is a good compromise in size vs. those giant searchlight ones. Not as cool looking as a Polarion or a Wolf Eyes... but $70.

Sorry to keep spamming this thread but I keep thinking of things to say after I already finish a post, hehhe... Bear with me!
I gotta say, for every day use, the lights I use most commonly are my Inova T1 and T2.
T1 - Tiny package with an astonishing amount of light! I love the fact that this LED light produces 85lumen and isn't bluish at all, it's the color of sunlight which is the best type of light.
Seen here is the T1 =

I also use my T2, which is the model above the T1. It's a tiny bit larger, and mainly has a larger head which allows you to have a more focused beam.
T2 =

I use the T1 the most often and grab for my T2 when I don't have my T1 handy, or if I need a light with some extra focus. They produce the same amount of light, so I grab for the T1 since it's so damn small. I usually have it in the change pocket of my jeans, it's that small.
Soundwave, lowend, and a couple other BAIC'ers came out to the secret sidewalk meet a couple months ago, and they were all witnesses to the greatness of the T1 light. Everyone was impressed by it and asked about it."Lowend" liked it so much that he bought one as soon as he came home that one night!
I highly recommend getting one, you can find some really good deals on this light. Some sites will sell it for over $100, but you can find them for $40ish if you buy online.
It's tiny, produces a lot of light, and has a long batter life time. Uses two CR123's IIRC. If you have $40 floating around, go to froogle and buy one right now. You will thank me later.
The unit is really high quality and is made of a block of CNC'd aluminum. I know it looks like plastic in the pics but its not.
