Question first time driving to oregon... any tips, etc?

work is sending me to portland for a conference. talked into driving since i need to break in new car.

seeing that i never been further north than oroville, and i will be taking I-5 all the way up, i need to know a few things:

speed traps?
best rest stop?
strip clubs?

well you get the idea.

btw, how is I-5 around ca/or border? is it as boring as going to LA?

thanks...

no it's actually beautiful. you won't have to worry about rain or fog (hopefully) so especially if it's sunny, it's a great drive. you may want to invest in a radar detector because i got my first ticket EVAR on the drive back from oregon (95 in a 65 in a massive rainstorm in a 160 HP '94 Explorer, i figure if you're gonna speed, you might as well at least try to make good time ) it was in some ghey *** county where they don't have computers so i had to take traffic school manually, which sucked total ****.

you could always look on that website that has listings of all the speed traps to give you a clue as to where to slow down.

by the way, i could save you a LOT of trouble by just breaking your STi in for you while you're gone. and best of all, i would be willing to provide this service for a one time special fee of... awww heck, i'll do this one for FREE since you're such a great guy!! imagine, someone doing such a great thing for free!! you never would have thought.... this is a deal of a lifetime, don't pass it up!!

Re: first time driving to oregon... any tips, etc?

My GF and I went as far north as Medford, then west to Coos Bay, and then back down along the coast, in the WRX last December.

*I wouldn't stay above 80 for prolonged periods of daytime on the 5.

*After driving the first PM & night, we stopped in Weed!

Holiday Inn Express (New, Clean)
1830 Black Butte Drive
WEED, CA 96094

*Once we got into Oregon, we ate at this decent place in Ashland:

Omar's in Ashland

*Definately stop to eat in Roseburg if you get a chance!

*Medford sucks, avoid it completely!

*Was with GF, so sorry no strip club reviews!

*Almost as boring as going to LA until you get to Weed.

*What Steppin' Razor said about pumping gas...

*Watch out for Oregonians driving super super fast in the rain in beater cars & trucks.

*Watch out for triple trucks, they are legal in Oregon

jeez eric, you are almost as furious as me!!

and yeah, i was lol on the gas thing. i forgot about that.... i got out and tried to figure out why it wouldn't work and this big fat fock comes running out yelling at me telling me i can't pump my own gas. so of course i tell him that i sure can pump my own gas, i do it all the time. so he tries to take the thing from me and i ask him what the hell he thinks he is doing. basically i almost sock this guy before the manager comes out and says it's illegal to pump your own gas in oregon. which i have a hard time believing, because that's the stupidest thing i've ever heard. so yeah, watch out for the gas pumping specialists up there. that must be where you go to practice if you want to be a gas man in nascar pit crews... hahahaha

oh yeah, and to oregon!!

I'm glad I didn't type out my gas pumping story...because that's EXACTLY what happened to me. illegal gas pumping.

(on second thought...I guess it's kinda nice, unless they put in 87! )

i love going to oregon... 92 octane for like $1.40

i almost always make it a night trip so i cant comment on driving through oregon in the day... but to kill the time take a CB radio and chat with the truckers... get some interesting stories... ummm watch out for oregon state troopers... they hate CAians, also their cruisers are all black... not white on black.. and way too many of them DONT have light bars on their cars.. the cops in the OR/CA border area are (in my experience) almost always in SUV's so ive always gone 90+ through there... and do get a radar detector

I remember when i pumped my own gas once... the guy kept insisting on pumping the gas but i kept telling him "no". we almost got into a fight until he told me it was state law.

Just humor the gas attendants...they make their job seem soooo important, like they're curing cancer or something

they are such idiots, if they just said it's illegal then people probably wouldn't fight them so much.

Put a piece of tape over the "California" on your license plate that says anything but "California". This way, you won't get tailed by cops in smalls towns or other sorts of jealous hate.

And be sure to buy all the expensive electronics you can and not pay sales tax

jason

p.s. dont do the tape thing. its just a joke
