Yes and no. Some of them come w/ ceramic logs(fake logs). Those are suppose to be in there. The other kind uses the gas to start the log. You can tell which one you have by looking for the fluke.

I think he means "flue."

Are those logs wood or ceramic? If they are ceramic it's a "fake" fireplace and you are just supposed to light the gas to get that fireplace effect and you shouldn't burn anything else. Main advantage - no ash to clean up.

I can't really tell from the pics but either your damper is closed or its a gas only.

well actaully looking again I think you damper is open and the soot and ash seems to indicate its a real fire place.

Ooops! Sorry, I meant flue. Looks like your fireplace can take regular wood. I would roll up a newspaper light it on fire and get a draw for the smoke then fire up the old gas w/ some logs. When it starts burning on its own. You can turn the gas off. Basically, you don't need kindling because the gas takes care of it.

those are ceramic logs and yes the damper is open. I would think the gas is for starting the log becuase gas 'pipe' is so low. But then again, the damper seems a little small to me so I don't know.

alright, I really don't know anything about fireplace (never had one before). So what is a flue?

a flue is the hole that allows the smoke to escape and a closer inspection of that third picture, it doesn't look like you have a proper flue for burning wood, also if you have ceramic logs in there, the chimney is probably for show, not for burning real wood. Sorry.

What you might want to do is call a chimney sweep to double check your flue to make sure it is in good working order and to make sure there's no cracks in the chimney and to make sure it's clear of creasote. Once you get it all cleaned out, the guy can also tell you what you can and can't burn. Better safe than sorry. Hate tohave you burn your place down. That would suck

Make sure that flue is open! Had to go to the emergency room when I was a tot for carbon monoxide poison from an improperly venting fireplace... No fun.

thanks guys! yeah, when I got the property, I did have it inspected. He said everything looks good, but didn't say what I can or can't burn. I'll try to look back into the report to see if I can find anything. Or I could call him and see if he could tell through the phone. Thanks again!
