shoot.....you can do that and keep your spare.
I have a custom box in my wagon that I'll probably be selling before too long. Fits on the side. Takes up barely any useable room. I can still fit like 4 sets of golf clubs back there...etc....
mine is the custom...secured by body structure. Damn near impossible to steal. Nice box. Needs a couple fiberglass repairs and a repaint though.

cd's aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
and like I said....what happens when your ipod breaks? mine just decided it didn't want me to access it anymore and erased all but like 7 songs. No cd's....you're ****ed.

should not need to change the input gain if your connected with the RCA cables
the bass EQ i would set in the middle for your high side and to your liking for your sub amp crossover FQ is the cross over frequency and that you need to tune by ear to how you like it also

I have too many cds. it would take me a year to get them all to digital...not to mention take a multi terabyte server..haaa.

I don't lug all my **** around either. I've had probably 200-300 cd's stolen out of my cars over the years...I carry very very few. I have probably around $20,000 in cd's currently...possible double that if I looked through enough boxes.
your method is about as smart as it gets actually. It's pretty much what I do. Shoot a buddy of mine had one of my cd cases for like a year...I pretty much forgot about it because I have it on my ipod/external hd's etc.
