Finally got around to tuning my wagon... interesting results
Hey guys,
I know I haven't been around much lately. I've been very busy at work during the week and tuning on the weekends and have had absolutely no time to work on my own car... its been running around on my base map for almost 2 months now. Last week I had LIC put in a Crucial racing uppipe, factory short shifter, engine/tranny mounts, and rear diff bushings, so on Sunday I finally set aside a couple hours to work on the tune. The car was running well on the base map, so I wasn't expecting any huge gains. I did a couple logs, figured out the optimal boost levels, and started tweaking timing a bit. My a/f ratios were still quite rich as I like to keep them while tuning boost, so I decided to try pushing timing a bit further before leaning it out. To my surprise, I was able to run a very aggressive timing curve at these a/f levels without a hint a of knock. This resulted in great power and UNREAL torque. I still have some work to do on the map because it was 2AM and I had to get up for work on monday, but here is how it stands:

Keep in mind the only power mods on my 05 wagon are the Crucial Racing uppipe, upgraded boost solenoid, and tune. I've never seen this much power and especially this much torque out of a car with just an uppipe before. Hell, this is more torque than most TBE cars make! I'll have to try this tuning approach out on a couple other cars before I decide if its that or if my car is just a bit of a freak. Either way, I thought the results were interesting to say the least and I can't wait to see what this car will do with a downpipe and open cutout
Thanks

Holy crap...I have an 05 wagon, and if all I need to get is a crucial uppipe and a tune+ECU to get that torque and power I'm gonna do it real soon. What EM is that with?

Sure, give me a call or shoot me an e-mail and we can schedule you in. I'm only tuning on the weekends now, so I hope that works for you. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks

Its tough to get a lot of low end torque with a bigger turbo because it doesn't spool up in the lower RPMs, but in my experience vf34's make about 230-250ft-lbs depending on supporting mods.
Like I said, however, this torque is very surprising even to me since most TBE cars I've tuned in the past don't even make 220ft-lbs. I have yet to decide if this car is just a freak or if this tuning approach will actually have similar effects on other cars as well. I will certainly try it out on a couple cars in the near future and keep you guys updated.
Thanks

I'd bet with the added back pressure of the stock TBE, it is what is contributuing to the huge low end Tq gains. I would expect that you would loose some low end once the TBE is installed. If we can put that down with my TBE in place, that'll be the money shot.

Not quite... contrary to popular belief, backpressure is never a good thing on a turbo engine. Once the turbo is in boost, any back-pressure after the turbo is hurting things. I HAVE made similar, and even more torque on TBE cars, but its not the norm.
Thanks
Thanks
I am aware of the problems with back pressure, it probably isn't often that you tune a car without at least a TBE. This is generally the first mod most people do, myself included. It will be interesting to see what we get out of my mule. Jeremy(crucial) has always ranted about the way my car pulls on stock tuning. He says I have a "special one". There have been a few people that have asked me if I have a tune. Maybe it is special?

you really can't compare a load based, corrected for atmospheric conditions dyno plot against a road dyno plot taken on a very cold night... unless it's the davis road dyno
