Yes, I believe in being proactive with my cars, then again there is a reason why I get 200,000+ miles out of stuff, and why my rock crawling beast, has 267,000 miles on it and I flog it like a red headed step child...yet it never gives in.
damn! help a fellow out! want to show me how it's done? i'm down for some lessons... =D will pay with food and beer?

Or if you've modded your car say with exhaust and tune and are making +40whp / 60ft-lbs, then whenever you're boosting, it becomes extreme.

Again, what is wrong with changing it every 3000. If $1000 a year is too much for your blood, you need to quit driving.

No one here said anything against preventative maintenance. No one also said Blackstone is not an absolute end-all-be-all answer, instead it is a good scientific measure/guideline. I always add a little bit of margin of error/comfort to their test recommendation. Why should I change my oil at 3,000 when the manufacture's recommendation and my own test results consistently indicate, let's say, 7,500?

That's 2.5x increase in lifetime ownership cost without any additional measurable benefit. It is awesome that "another $1,000" is pocket change for you but to some that's a month's rent or another ~$30-40k FV addition to a retirement account.

Anyway, I probably said more that I had/needed/wanted...Again, to each their own. Whatever makes you sleep at night

I agree changing excessively is a waste of money. My SOP on every car has always been 3K. The 3750 was the recommended on the manual, which was also standard for all 08-10 models. Then in 11 Subaru increased it and '15 they increased again. I don't have any issue with SOA or whomever increasing it for new models... But for a dealer to start recommending 7K for all model years? That just doesn't seem right to me.

Changing the oil excessively may not due any harm, but why not spend the money on other parts of the car instead? An extra $1000 a year in oil changes could go towards doing a clutch job or some other maintenance for the car.

Not my car though, everyone spends their money where they think it is best used.

Personally, I usually shot for doing oil changes about every 5,000 (easy to remember to change when the odometer clicks to a 0 or 5 time to change the oil). Also, do a tire rotation at the same time.

Granted, dino oil vs synthetic oil changes change pricing and intervals for each car depending on what is being used in that car.

Yep - that's not a bad thing (even though it can sound like being put off). It means you are important to him and he wants to know what's up, but can't now. I have worked at a few shops here and there over the years and the one thing that surprised me the most was how many people come by to chat, and how it affects the work that is being done. Most people are cool about this, but it's a balance that the shop/owner must do without upsetting anyone.
