I think that the prices out here are way to high. 275000 for the cheapest 1bdr1bath condo. Its because we are near the water and a big city. I could go to Georgia, about 1 1/2 hours from Atlanta and get 2 acres, 4brd 4bath, full basement for 275000. but its not by the ocean and not near a "great" city.

I mean, look at it this way.
The three-year depreciation rate is about the same, and with the car at least you have a means of escape.

The fact is, we have a LOT of poor people and a LOT of rich people, and less inventory than that. Too many people want to stay here, and that's what jacks up the price.
Until people leave in droves and/or the jobs all go away, prices will not go down. Even the net bubble bursting didn't cut the demand enough.
As expensive as prices are, people NEED places to live. So people pay until they can't so they can have a place over the other guy who is less willing.

to many people in to small of an area = not enough housing.
we need to just get an I-club buy and get about 10 houses and just rent them out. after a few years of saving up we will all be able to afford houses. Plus we can do group installs outside without much planning.

I blame the ****ing environment ***** and the NIMBYs for the high home prices. What is with the extreme environmentalism and NIMBYism in the bay area??
The NIMBY's and environmentalists are part of a 1-2 punch against newcomers who want to put down roots here. There are too many open space preserves in the bay areas. I say build the hillsides, ranch lands, and fill in parts of the bay. To keep open space, one has to build up, but the NIMBY's whine about high-rise condo towers ruining their "entitled" views. Then there is a griping about traffic and transit. NIMBY's don't want buses and commuter trains because of concerns for noise, pollution, and crime. These are all codewords for keeping out undesired peoples from their neighborhoods.

Haha.. We are trying to get to the point of being able to buy a house early next year. My pops just sold a house I lived in in Hilo on the Big Island, nice area for the most part - 3 bedroom/2 bath, garage, etc for $240k. Couldn't get a tool shed for that here.

Get rid of a bunch of rich bastards that buy houses for way over what they are worth just to live in our area and our housing prices would come down.
