Thumbs down Exhaust Illegal in California

Ok so today I put on my JIC Full Titanium with my friend and I really like it, its not too loud. So anyway we come out of a parking lot and I see a cop who is coming at us. He is muggin at me then the cop makes a U-Turn and pulls right up on my *** and turns on the red light. He strolls up to my car, yadayadayada, standard stuff, then he tells me that my exhaust is illegal and that ive got window tint. I immiadiatly ask him why my exhaust is illegal and he says there can be no exhaust modifications what-so-ever in California! Iwas like "Are you joking me?" Anywho the guy didnt give me any sort of ticket but said the next time he sees my car he will take further action. Is it true you cant have any exhaust modification at all in California?

Common reasons for being pulled over when it's not a moving violation:

As far as window tint, if your front driver's side and passenger side are tinted, you will be pulled over from time to time.

Same goes for missing front license plate.

Same goes for exhausts with 5" grapefruit shooter tips that sounds louder than any factory exhaust. Need not be over 95 dB, just louder than stock for them to hassle you. Don't get upset - just get an exhaust that doesn't attract attention to your car.

Law enforcement looks for these things.

did the cop check for cats?

do we need to go to a special place to get a certificate for the exaust being under 95db?

Well the guy hastled me about why I didnt have plates on my car. I told him I bought it 3.5 weeks ago so then he ripped of my parking pass covering the VIN number off to run it and see if I was lieing about when I purchased the car.

Its also your STI wing!

No seriously, I had a cop flip a U in the middle of the street the FIRST DAY I had my sti, and tail me for about a mile, think the only reason he didnt pull me was I didnt even have plates yet, just the Prestige tags, guess he didnt know they come looking like that from the factory now

I believe cops can give you a ticket if your modified exhaust has no catalytic converters, is louder than 94 decibels, or you have any kind of modified intake that does not have a CARB certificate. Which means yes, any modification a cops sees allows them the right to pull you over. Whether there really is a violation is another story.

1. they need to test you now for 94db, it used to be subjective
2. anything after the cat does not need a carb sticker
3. No cats is not the same as an exhaust ticket, its a $500 fine and they can tow you

I just went to the ref the other day and he said you could do anything you want to the exaust after the last 02 sensor, as long as it's under 95 db. This was the one at evergreen. I got pulled over when a chp pulls up next to me at 65 with his window down and listened to my exaust. Wrote me up for anything he could including modified emmissions... So I had to go to the ref to prove that I didn't. Dummy didn't even know what he was looking at... just wanted to ruin my day any way he could. I come from a law enforcement family and know how and why to be polite to cops and show them respect. This guy was really was just a dick.
