Gawd, where do I begin?
I've seen guys put big rig plates on an Integ, K car plates on a Lexus LS, "Y for Yankee" military base plates, commercial truck plates on a Civic, plates from the boondocks, plates from the wrong era, plates that are just plain incorrect, you name it!
Japanese plates have the region where the car is registered written in kanji on the top, with either a "300" series or "500" series number next to it that reveals when the car was first registered to that plate. Beneath, there is either a hiragana character or dash (or a Y for Yankee on US military vehicles) before four large numbers separated into pairs. Standard cars (which include all our favorite tuning cars) have black lettering on a white background, and the plate size and dimensions are the same as American plates.
Common mistakes: K-car plates are black lettering on yellow backgrounds and go ONLY on K-cars because they are in a separate tax bracket, big rig plates are HUGE and don't belong on anything but a big rig (preferably decked out like Optimus Prime on crack
), commercial truck plates are white lettering on a black background (or was it dark brown?), some "home made" JDM plates have too few/too many characters or incorrect characters, "300" series plates on newer than m/y 2000 cars and vice versa, and last but not least, NO ONE from Japan would like to brag that they're from the sticks like Hakusan or somewhere embarrassing like that

Hakusan is one of the sacred mountains of Japan, so no roads except for pilgrimage trails on that bad boy. Besides, Hakusan "city" was incorporated in 2001 by annexing like, 5 mountain villages. Not a cool place

my buddy with an e46 330xi has one of the euro plates on the front just because it looks a lot better lol. plus it matches his actual plate numbers in the rear
Can I see an example of what would be non-
on a GD STi?
Also, since were talking about BMWs I saw a gorgeous M3 parked on the Embarcadero in front of Epic steakhouse. Black satin paint, small carbon fiber bits, some wild vented looking hood....yummmmmmm.

Like this, but without the frame and shade. It's from Shinagawa, which is what metropolitan Tokyo vehicles are registered as, and it's a late model "500" series with no special or unusual markings.
