Euro plates on some USDM BMWs?

Euro plates on some USDM BMWs?
So I see some of these BMWs (primarily 3 series) with Euro plates underneath their US CA plates. Anyone know why? Is it because it's part of that BMW program where they fly in a buyer to Germany to pick up their car and drive it around?

Yeah, we got to keep the euro plates when we picked up my mom's 530 on European Delivery. They're in my office though, not still on the car.

Actually, that bugs me more since some people put REALLY stupid Japanese plates on their cars. I'd go into what sort of bone-headed mistakes people make with Japanese plates, but then I'd just sound like a petty internet geek
