Interesting... I'm no mechanic, obviously.

I can't imaging having to invest in my own chip design/synthesis/simulation tools to do my job.

Hmm, I'd think the mechanic would be doing the wrench turning, not the tuning. Bringing a tool chest the size of the one LIC was raffling - full of tools to fix cars - that's typical of a journeyman-level mechanic.

state law has a part to play in this: if the shop requires an employee to bring their own tools they are entitled to 2x min. wage (if memory serves me) or something similar.

basically, if your boss requires you to bring your own tools thats 2x what your pay used to be. if bossman provides the tools its the regular rate.

Not quite so on the highlighted portion; it is only 2x the $8.00/hr minimum wage. So if a person was being paid $17/hr w/o tools, the employee can be required to provide tools w/o a pay increase.

And this applies to hand tools, not shop tools like lifts, presses, air compressors, etc.

And pay is based off of hrs on sight, not actually worked.
For example: Adam is at my shop 8hrs/day but I only have 4hrs of actual vehicle-related work. The remainder of the time I have him clean, watch the paint dry, or whatever.

I still have to pay Adam his regular hourly pay for doing nothing productive.
Or send him home.

I don't think all that knowledge would fit in my brain.
