It's not the puss touching YOU it's the fact that you are opening up the skin of someone - infection is almost certain without the proper precautions. The hands, next to the mouth, contain the most bacteria on the human body - so it's not about touching the puss (though, it's gross), it getting what is on your hands in your patient.

That's what the alcohol is for as well - she should have wiped him down before cutting him open, again +1 for people who watch House or ER and think they can do it themselves with NO training.

And they way they did it - if they don't use a wick and pack it right guess what will happen in 2-3 weeks? Yeah, the skin will seal back up and the puss will grow back and a new cyst will emerge...
