Earthquake drill at JOEBOBBUCKET's work.
So I am here this morning waiting for out earth quake drill here at work. It is going to be a huge deal and I am not looking forward to having to stand out on the runway in the cold for a couple hours. Last year our center had the first of what I can only assume be a yearly occurance from then on out. They stage little mini disasters all over the center. Obviously nothing that is really going to create danger but more simulate it. they will have fake injured people that need to be rescued and and tended to to treat wounds and things of that nature. So some people will be stuck in the building with fake injuries and when we evacuate our building and they are not there we have to figure out how to respond etc... Then we all get to walk out to the runway and listen to them yammer on for a while with a microphone. I fell asleep while sitting there for a couple hours last year. I am expecting to do the same this year, that is if i can fall asleep in the cold outside. Why do I have to do this crap. I don't have to rescue anyone, I don't have to treat their wounds, all I do is sit there... I am going to sit there and play some games on my phone.
Just thought I would let you know your tax dollars are being well spent on me taking a nap and playing some games this morning.

sorry man, we had a fire drill at our building last week. 14 floors worth of people walking into china town to go to our meeting spot in some small park wasnt too much fun.

There is a lot involved with SAR teams going into buildings and conducting searches for people. Training on these types of things is very important, that way you at least have some idea of what to do when a real emergency happens
Knowledge and experience saves lives.
For me, I dread the next big quake.

If nobody can find them in the safe gathering zones, you have to assume the possibilty that they are still inside and notify emergency services about it.
they dont schedule these things to make your life miserable. they schedule these things to save lives.
think world trade center.
after this darned meeting i'm scheduled to go at 10am, i'll post something i read about WTC and how one man prepared his company so well that he save lots of lives...

A big drill like this is very benificial to giving people experience. In a large disaster, there is a very large possibility that emergency services will not be able to respond to your location to help out. So, all of your co-workers have to rely on each other to help out.
Sure you don't have to rescue anyone, you don't have to treat their wounds. If you change your sentence around you cound say that I do have the ability to rescue someone, and I do have the ability to treat somebody as best as I can. Everybody, even without proper training CAN do something to the best of their ability. That is what's most important.
Instead of standing around watching injured people suffer, you can be more pro-active by asking "is there anything I can do to help?" There are tons of things. Getting water, blankets, bandages, first aid kits, bringing needed supplies to people. This is much better than just doing nothing.
If you were one of those injured people, you would want your co-workers to help you out to the best of their abilities.
Like I said above, I dread the next big quake. Mostly because with my knowledge, stories I've been told, training, lectures, it makes me sad in a way knowing that there aren't enough Emergency workers to help everybody out, and there are so many people who will be injured in ways that they could live if they had some help, even a little bit of help, instead of losing their life when all they needed was a blanket to keep their core temp up, or somebody to wrap their leg up to help stop the bleeding.

I do understand that it is benificial to a lot of the rescue workers here. They have to train for the big one. I do maintain the roster of everyone that works in my building and I do talk with the managers when they are checking everyone that made it out of the building and let them know where a lot of their employees are.
With this drill though they are telling us not to treat anyone when the real thing does happen and if we find someone that is injured to call the emergency crews here on center. With that being said this is kinda a waste for about 4000 people that have to stand around. The average employee does not have much to do in this case. I would be all for taking more first aid and cpr courses and being trained on how to actually rescue people but that is not what this is about for the average employee like me.
There were about 500 people that were actually being trained today and learning how to be prepared for it to happen. For the rest of us yes there are a lot of things that we can actually do to help when it does really happen. Yes blankets bandages etc. I have a first aid kit in my office. That would be the first thing I would grab along with our Emergency action plan as that too is stored in my office.
I am not trying to make it seem as though this is not important but the way that they have set this up for the average employee there is nothing they want us to do. If this was used for a buildidng by building hands on training like it is for the rescue crews then yes it would be a lot more benificial to the rest of us.

It wasn't that bad. Only had to stand around for about an hour and fifteen miniutes. I told my division cheif that if there were a real earthquake I would not be standing around, I would be doing whatever it took to get to my two kids (one at the Ames Child Care Center the other at her school).

In offices big & small these things are needed. Hell we should be teachin first aid/cpr in high school/college instead of crap like home ec or basketweaving.
We did our evacuation drill last week, first time in the new office. I am in charge of health & safety so I was a bit nervous but we were done in 5min flat.
I'm glad we have a small office & not a multifloor hi rise. It was even worse doing these at juvy due to 24 hour shifts, & keepin teens contained during chaos is like hurding cats.

are they going to build slides inside the new world trade center? wouldnt that have been a smart idea years ago? every building over 20 storys should have a huge *** slide, so people can evacuate faster and not need to rest as theyre going down, or sprain ankles.
But no, that would be too smart of an idea for the architect getting paid millions to design a building wouldnt it.
like the couple making out in the closet in Kindergarten Cop LOL
