E85 Fun with the VF39 in the Bay Area!
 

Sean decided to finally get back in the game, so we've been playing around with E85 on his car. A couple days ago, we did some more tuning on a cooler night and got some very impressive results! I'm going to be switching my own car to E85 very soon as well :).

For those who don't know, this is the car that held the VF39 1/4 miles record for about 2 years. The record was recently broken, so Sean decided to get back into it. This is an 06 STI with fairly basic mods:

Crucial Racing Downpipe (catless)
HKS Carbon-Ti Catback
GrimmSpeed UP w/38mm Tial EWG
APS 65mm CAI
APS Inlet
DW850cc Injectors
Walbro
Hallman MBC
Perrin Sidefeed V2 FuelRails
NGK 1step colder plugs
EQ Tuning Custom Tune

Note the car still has Stock TMIC, Stock Headers, and VF39 with cracks ;)

The tune was done on E85 in 55F weather. Its running 24-25psi peak boost and is nowhere near the knock threshold. Here's the chart:

When we tuned this car previously on VP109, it made 337whp/398ft-lbs and ran 11.7 @ 115-116mph. That tune was also much more aggressive and less consistent than the current E85 tune, so we're hoping to see some great results at the drag strip.

The Evo guys have been enjoying E85 for a long time now, so I'm excited to finally get some subies on the corn juice :D

It actually hit 422ft-lbs on a couple pulls, but I think the stock BPV is starting to leak at these boost levels making the torque peak a bit inconsistent. We're going to try a new BOV and some headers later on to see what else the VF39 can do :)

Need more E85 stations.

Is there a list? Still just one in Concord and one in Hayward for the entire Bay Area?
I'd seriously daily drive on that stuff if it was available since we don't get real premium. Sure it's a bit more expensive, but not that much. But there would need to be a station in a 5 mile radius of either home or work.

Yeah, that's badass power for stock turbo! I'm going the same route once I get those DW 900cc side feeds.

Nice results for sure!! I cannot wait for CA to get on the corn fuel bandwagon.

I would not call an external gate or fuel rails basic mods though. This car is 90% prepped for a larger turbo!!

Very general question. You need to provide far more info about what your setup is/will be, that you wish to run E85 on. You need to flow way more fuel with E85 than gasoline, which is why you need injectors, pump, and [U]depending on your setup[/U] (ie: turbo, and supporting mods) you may need even larger injectors than 800cc or 850cc, a better fuel pump than just a Walbro, fuel pressure regulator, possibly a surge tank, etc. The list goes on, but it's dependent solely on your application. The car mentioned in this thread is mostly stock aside from some bolt-ons; with some injectors, fuel rails, and a pump :)

Don't forget there a station in San Jose too off commercial. That's where I get mine. $2.59 per gallon last time I bought some :)

Aftermarket fuel rails are only truly needed when your flow exceeds the diameter of the rails I don't really know what size this is, but I don't imagine 1000cc injectors would be quite big enough. People run 850s on the stock rails.

However, the stock rails are a series system, so there will be some variation in the amounts of fuel to the various cylinders. You either have to tune per cylinder (which is only possible on the 32 bit ECUs and really nobody does that because it's a total nightmare) or you have to tune for whatever the worst cylinder is.

Parallel rails will help reduce the fueling differences between cylinders and so will net you a small amount of extra horsepower due to them all being more even.

So what psi was the vp109 tune at? Are you saying the e85 is much safer on the motor when running the same power levels? is it just safer to run more or is it actually more powerful than say the vp109

That is some insane power... there has to be a package you can give to mod any car into E85 with a tune. Obviously including larger fuel rails, injectors, etc. Safe reliable E85 just seems so economically sound. LoL
