DVI to HDMI question

If I need a DVI to HDMI (running from my video card to my lcd which only has hdmi in) can i get a cable that says hdmi to dvi? or does it have to say DVI to HDMI because the signal is going from a DVI port on a video card to an HDMI port on an LCD.

I would think it wouldn't matter if its dvi to hdmi, or hdmi to dvi with these two types of connections, as long as they are both male plugs.. but i am looking for some words from you experienced home theater/LCD folks.

they should be bi-directional right? where they can go either direction?

thanks!

they are.

just remember, HDMI carries both audio and video, whereas DVI is video only. so you need to figure out that path.

ya i know how they work.. and because they send in binary, i figured they should be bi-directional. send or receive either direction.

I have a DVI cable that I can hook up to my mac book, and then hook up to an HDMI tv... So DVI output to HDMI display is defiantly possible.

It is also possible to do HDMI output to DVI display, however if the content is protected the output device may not allow display.

Also when doing DVI to HDMI or vice versa you will loose the sound data since DVI only does video unlike HDMI which does video + audio + content protection.

^^ya i know.
My question is more so "can data be sent back and forth" on the same cable or do you have to get a cable that says dvi to hdmi when its going from a dvi source to an hdmi display, and vice versa.

but i've read on it and it direction doesn't matter.. it can go either direction with the same cable.

I think the cable should say "Straight Through" that way it goes back and forth. I could be wrong. But thats how it is with VGA.

^^but vga is analog so that would make more sense.

And Mad Ra88it.... 3 dollars on ebay.. the cables send binary so interference doesn't matter so much as its either gonna know if its a 0 or a 1 or it wont so i figure save the money hehe.

Yeah it'll work fine.

But bidirectional won't matter because your video card is output only anyways.

Any DVI-HDMI cable should work for you.

ya i know my video card is an output. but my worry was about it saying hdmi to dvi i wanted to make sure that also meant dvi to hdmi because i have seen cables that are send data this direction only.
