DVD Recording/Ripping/Editing Question
I picked up a Samsung DVD recorder from Circuit****ty today. I was going to hook it up to my satellite TIVo so I could copy stuff off and put it onto DVD. I also figured I could transfer my Sony 8mm tapes to DVD as well.
And just to give you the layout... Tivo unit is upstairs and the computer with the DVD reader/writer is downstairs.
Here is my question... if I want to edit video from the DVD's I burn on the recorder on my computer do I have to RIP it first?
If so, can anyone recommend a good ripper and editor for the PC? I was thinking using Pinnacle V9. Any other setup suggestions would be appreciated as well. I haven't opened or installed the recorder yet.

yes,
the files off a movie DVD is something a normal editing program cant handle.
www.doom9.org has various stuff on ripping DVDs.
as for editing s/w, i'm a sony vegas user, but that is retail $600 or so...
if i were you thought, i would skip the tivo->dvd-> computer to edit.
i would get a usb 2.0 capture for the computer.
feed the tivo to the capture device into the computer, bypassing the numerous conversion phases.
even better would be if your sony camcorder was a D8 one and you can feed that straight into the computer via firewire.
lemme know if i confused you more.

I guess the problem is how to get the video file from my TIVo to my computer which is on a completely different floor of our house?

The newer Tivo software can export directly to PCs / Macs. I believe it dumps out an MPEG-2 stream, although it may be MPEG-4. I haven't played with it, personally, but one of the guys I work with is a huge Tivo hacker dude. I think the Tivo will send the data out both the USB and network ports, so either connect a laptop or usb drive to the usb port or transfer it over the network. Not certain of the specifics, but I can find out more next week when I'm back in the office.

Unfortunately, I'm running with a DirectTv Tivo which does NOT support wireless network support. All of the USB ports are DISABLED. I guess I have no choice but to use the DVD recorder.

Well since yer local (relatively speaking), I can ask Mr.TivoHacker if he can "fix" that problem for you. He's one of the engineers in my group that does really frightening things with computers and other electronic devices (i.e. he's really f'ing good at what he does), so if anyone can solve that problem, it's him. He'll probably charge a small service fee, but at least you wouldn't have to worry about it in the future.
