DSLR Camera question

I'm looking at the Canon EOS 40D and at Costco it's $1434.99 and includes the 18-55mm IS Lens and Flash as well.

RitzCamera sells it for $1299.99 with EF 28-135mm IS lens only

they're are probably other stores that sell in the same ballpark with different lenses or kits, but for now, is the Costco price better or the Ritz one better? I'm not sure which flash is included in the costco price, but am I better off buying a flash separately or is the Costco kit a good price?

Unless you KNOW you will use an external flash (which is doesn't sound like you do), I go for the Ritz kit as it has a more flexible lens to start you off with (assuming the are other wise the same in features - no 'L' glass or USM, etc).

My 28-135 IS USM lens is by FAR the most used one I have.

What flash does the Costco kit come with?

In terms of lenses, the 28-135 is of better quality than the 18-55 kit lens.

Like I said, I'm not sure, but when I saw the display model, there was a flash that looked similar to this one locked behind the display case window. I really don't know if it comes with the one pictured below though.

I would still buy the kit with the better lens and buy yourself a nice speedlight separatly. The lens has 10x the importance than the light.

what about this kit.

Nikon D60 with 18-55 VR Lens and 55-200 VR Lens and camera bag for $825

I know nothing about cameras as I'm just getting into photography as a serious hobby, but I want to start out with a good SLR camera with plenty of features and not a starter camera with basic stuff so that I won't regret buying the camera when I get more familiar with all the features and the performance.

Plus my max budget would be around $1500 (not including taxes) to spend for a kit.

its up to you man...

28-135mm lens gives you the broader zoom range..

whilst the 18-55mm lens gives you a wider angle, but not as much of a zoom... but you do get the flash capability. imho, the 18-55mm IS lens isn't half bad... i'm assuming that they upgraded it over the old 18-55mm lens besides the IS.. if they didn't do anything else beside slap on an IS system... then its still a POS lens...

its 2 sides to the coin... either or works.. all up to you.

after owning both equipment (Canon EOS-10d, Canon Rebel XT, Nikon D70, Nikon D50), here's my quick breakdown between the 2 manufacturers...

Canon overall a faster and more responsive camera for my tastes... loved using it in action shots and in extreme lowlight conditions.

Nikon, i love the colors and saturation it offers. I much prefer my nikon over my canon any day when it comes to landscape and portrait shots.

try them both out... see how you like it.

if ur in the san jose/milpitas area, i wouldn't mind you borrowing my camera (nikon d70s) for a day.

They usually throw in cheap lens with those deals.. costco throws in a better flash then the one on the body but it comes with a crap lens..ritz throws on a better lens (not necessarily better photo quality but range) n no flash.. i would probably ask ritz to price match with a flash as well. If they don't I would say go with body only and pay a lil more for better lens. Avoid all canon lens with silver ring, those are the cheap usually plastic built.

that's exactly what I'm looking for. Want to take mulitiple clear pics when people/objects are moving, especially in low lighting.
