admittedly, I have not installed any patches so i dont know if you can install one without the other.

my PSP is bone stock.. and my buddy gave me his old 32mb memory stick with about 100 games on it and put it in my psp and games ran without a hitch.

and by mod, i meant run homecooked 3rd pt hack-software. Potentially buggy... i was already hesitant to run PSPvideo9. It can also be questionable what is going on your psp. It's not likely to steal your identity or anything, but there are jackholes who think it's cool to mess up systems. Hey, if there are viruses for PDAs and Cell phones...
but again, it's just my opnion of safer than sorry // risk vs. benefit

I vote psp because I have played both and i like the psp alot more.. I dont like using that little pen device to move around with and to look around with.. The psp is alot easier to play and also has alot of great features... You say that you wont watch movies on it but you never know.. I went on a plane ride to Cancun recently and the inflight movie was in spanish... And alot of people were watching movies on their psps... Plus the psp's to me seems like it had much better graphics and the screen looks alot bigger than the Ds.

However, airplane is also the great weakness for BOTH PSP and DS... currently both only support wi-fi/wireless multiplayer... which is COMPLETELY unusuable on an airplane (due to regulations). So I would not necessarily trade in the GBA just yet ^^;;; Although I am confident that as users ***** and moan about it, eventually wired solutions will come about... Nintendo has always used wired networking MP before, and I don't doubt that Sony can't (too many negatives...) make some sort of USB networking hub or some junk... or some totally schway IR networking hub ^^
Anyhow, keep in mind both units are still rather 'young'... there's a lot of potential to be played out as time rolls on...

Think of it this way---
Nintendo DS: A Portable game cube
Sony PSP: A portable play station
If you like game cube games way more than play station games.. get a DS.

A handheld is not so drastically different from a console that reputations would not carry over... at the end of the day, sony has a world reputation for building very good electronics... to say nothing of game consoles (if i recall, the playstation came about because nintendo originally contracted sony to build their unit and then reneged on it when the issue of CD format was brought up; hell, nintendo arguably is and has always been more concerned over copyright isues than sony, so much so as to nearly cripple themselves =P).
Moreover, the psp doesn't do anything 'new' and so there isn't any technology concerns to worry about. By 'new' I mean 'dual screen' tech or 'microphone input' or 'touch screen' or (hearken back) 3d goggle visual (well ok, umds are a new media... but sony has very good experience with creating high density optical media formats ala MD/Hi-MD)... The day after the very first gameboy got competition, Nintendo knew it couldn't compete with the others in a straight fight... spinach green color loses =P So since then they've always tried to do something different, something new so that it wouldn't have to compete. It wasn't until relatively recently that Nintendo had no (real) competition in the portable market.
With MS becoming more of a contender in the console market, and Nintendo being it's only competition in the portable arena, Sony finally decided to jump headlong into portables... it's just smart money for them. They'd been planning it for a while, but never really felt any need i think to establish themselves there.
Hell, maybe the Sony-Ericsson branch wanted to really burn Nokia =P =)
In any event, pedigree is about the last thing I'd worry about with regards to either of these systems (if anything, sony would get the nod =P)...
