Still- what can you get from anywhere for 41K that has all wheel drive, room for 4 and their ski stuff- and performs anywhere near STI capability?

I think the new STi is pretty cool. I always said if they made an STi Wagon, I'd have to have one. Well... now they do, sorta.

BUt with a price approaching $40K, it seems Subaru is departing from what made the WRX and STi so appealing in the first place. Good cheap performance.

There might not be any other cars that I'd rather have for $40K, but that's still a hefty chunk of change for a car that I intend to drive the **** out of. Subaru is pricing the car out of the demographic that made it so popular in the first place.

Not much.

However, after depreciation/resale, an Audi S4 might be better value if you can afford the extra $7,000 up front. BTW, I don't know this for a fact, I just suspect that the Audi would hold its value better over time.

Finally an opinion I completely agree with.

I was in the same boat- in '04 or '05 I would have traded in my 02 wagon on an STI wagon without a moments hesitation.

But no STI wagon for all that time meant I kept repairing my old car until it got paid off this last year.

Now that they have an STI wagon, I have a nicely maintained, gravel-tweaked wagon with HG coil-overs, 20+ spare wheels and no real reason to get back into hefty monthly payments and more expensive insurance.

While I am one of those who totally love the new car, it just isn't in the cards for me at this point in time

In a sense Subaru blew it on 2 accounts, not offering it sooner, and then pricing it just out of reach for us in middle income brackets, but high cost of living areas.

Maybe so, but I would bet that the maintenance and repairs on an Audi will run a whole lot more than for an STI over any given amount of time.

and besides, you can't left foot brake in Audi's -where's the fun in that?

one more detail, an S-4Avant list starts at $49K, option it out just a little and pay taxes and you're looking north of 55 OTD I'd bet.

the old STI for 41k I'd get something else, but the new STI is not supposed to be the same as the old STI

my evo was 28k and has room for 5. With the 13k extra, you can buy a roof rack and a nice set of snow tires.

Uhhh, you can not buy it and buy a more reasonably priced car or buy an equivalently priced car that is more "worth" 40k?

msrp on the BMW 335xi is $40,800 and the 328xi is $34,300.

Obviously the STi is going to be sportier than these, but I bet a lot of people would choose the BMW.

Personally, I'm not a fan of BMW. I owned a 3 series for 10 months, got fed up with it and traded it in on an MR2.

Wait a minute, you guys are forgetting the 2004 STI was $45k+ OTD when it first came out

Total inflation right here - watch at the end of model year the STI will be doing $35k OTD w/o options

My roomate bought a 328xi that ended up being $45k OTD (w/ a paltry 230hp), and I don't know ANYONE who purchased a 335i for less than $50k after all was said and done.

Yeah very true. When I lived back in the UK, we used to joke that a steering wheel was considered an optional accessory on the BMWs. Merc used to have a similar reputation. Neither even had a radio in their base package! Having said that, many people will make the comparison with initial sticker price in mind.

Maintenance on the BMW was horribly expensive as well. It required dealer visits every 2300 miles to keep its warranty. I spent around 1100 ukp on scheduled services in 10,000 miles driving - and that was without it ever going wrong!

Some people still want the name/image though. Personally, I'll wait 'till the STi's release hype dies down and check them out then - maybe 18-24 months from now.

Please guys dont hate! I drove the 335i and the new sti I'm a bimmer fan also but man the sti is just another car.. Is luxary in a sporty way. The seats and the quality of the motor bay and under the car is amzing. Trust me just go look at the car. It is 10 times diffrent than what u see online or tv.. For 40k their is no other car period.. The way is drives and handles. I drove the 07 sti for 1 week.. The 2008 STI will kill it in any kind of road test..
