which dremel?

Can anybody shine me some light and help me pick a nice, cheap dremel to work on the heat shield while I am doing the downpipe install?

not really. the cordless one is weak as hell. Mine can cut only really soft material. Harder ones I need to use the 35k rpm one.

what he said, the little cordless job will burn through a battery in about 3 minutes of serious use, you'll want at least one that plugs into the wall.

Looks like they've upgraded their cordless line since I got mine, but I'd still point you towards one of the corded models, and I'd stay away from the low-cost knock-offs at places like Harbor freight.

How much can you afford? and if you need it for cutting metal you can skip the gigantic attachment kits and just get yourself a couple of good carbide cutters.

But they have dozens of models and packages, kind of hard for any of us to say "go get model XXX it will solve all your problems" shop around, figure out what you want out of the tool and see which one suits your needs

I actually bought a cheap 9.99 one from Kragen for the hell of it. Vibrates a little more, but for 10 bucks for a cutting job? Not bad.

Thanks guys!

but I don't think I am ready to spend $80 for a dremel yet...

I am currently looking at the harbor frieght $20 one (for a newie like me, I think it's enough)

any opinions?

I have a dremel kit. Think it's the 71 piece set up. 10 speed setting. corded. I dig it. it's got a nice rubber grip on it and it's a decent size for use.

Don't go cordless. They work decent when they are fully charged but they drop quickly and don't work as well.

I don't know anything about the harbor frieght one..never used it. Is it just the dremel or does it come with attachments? Tips? Just remember you'll be spending money on all the little attachments and tips to do what you need to do. Might as well get them with the kit.

You can get a decent "dremel" brand dremel with like 40 bits for like $60 at sears. I think you can get them for like $40 still.

for $20 it's worth a shot. If it burns up and you find you like and use dremels you can always pick up a higher quality one.

Actually my dremel burned up. I ran the cordless one at max rpm for too long and it melted the connection near the battery. POS. I had to scrape all the melted plastic off.
