Sit down. shut up. eat that guys face off. Period.

I did Petsmart training at the new one on Curtner and Monterey in San Jose. Its was kinda pricey, like $120 but me and my GF ended up doing 2 of the classes for our lab. The trainer Ashley is really really good, I highly recommend going there. We adopted our lab so we didn't do the puppy training so not sure how that one goes, I think the puppy one is cheaper too but not sure. hope this helps

Classes didn't do as much as I had liked, so I am doing a boarding training in Petaluma soon. Its a week long, during which time I am going to Kauai!!

EDIT: Also, at around 6-8 months, a lot of dogs go through their adolescence, and despite their training, it seems as though they will do whatever they can to do the exact opposite of what you are asking them to do. Its not that they don't know what you are saying to them, they just don't give a ****. My pup is going through that right now!
I'd like classes for both the pup and us. My wife and I will be going.

This is our first dog too. Both the wife and I never had dogs while growing up. Sounds like you are in the same boat... you are in for a lot of work. We have two kids and I think that the dog is more work.

Petco has the clickers for $1. It really hasn't worked for my puppy. Damn Boxers have way too much energy and she won't get on the treadmill to wear her out. We've never had a problem with our other dogs for training. But it's mostly my parents dog and my mom is the one that needs the training. I have the puppy trained so that I point and she sits. I hold my hand up and she'll stay, not very long right now but we're working on it. But my parents let her get away with murder and just yell and scream about it. Oh well.

We had dogs when I was a kid but my wife was never allowed to have a dog when she was little and she is seriously excited. We know it will be probably the hardest thing yet for us but don't want to wait any longer. I am home a lot lately so it's a rare opportunity to not have to take too much time off work.

Justin you know how confusing this can be for her. Note to everyone interested in this thread. Everyone in the household must be on the same page. You are training for behavior, if a dog is required to behave in a certain manner by one member of the household and not another you will have a very rebellious pooch on your hands. Get a list of commands together. Teach the same the same command in the same manner. For god sakes don't yell unless it's absolutely necessary. Yelling regularly just continues to excite the animal. Now if a shout is used to express what they did was very bad and only when they are very bad they will pick up on this.

Side story: I was playing with my dog last night, rough housing and the like, I bounced the ball and swiped to grab it in the air, all the while my dog was doing the same thing my thumb met her K9's. Punctured two holes in the top of my thumb. Hurt like hell. What I thought was really cool was how concerned she was. I clutched my thumb to stop the bleeding, the ball stayed where it lied and she just followed me around with the most curious upset expression. Her tail was tucked, she was really upset. I thought it was really special for her to be so concerned. Dogs rule!!!

Jacob, if you're going to be home anyway, this is a great time to establish a few things. The more of your time you can give a pup the better. Not hugging and kissing there's time for that later. Establish your role as king ish. Crate training, house training, play nice, chewing biting, young child socialization, taking food, feeding time, rules of the house.

No doubt - we plan on crate training and can use all the advice we can get. When my wife's work slows down a bit we should get together and take some notes - sounds like we could learn a lot from ya.

Note: I think it SUCKS that dogs are not allowed on caltrain. I understand if we had a St. Bernard or something but sheez. We have actually been getting around a lot on caltrain but that will end soon. Have to also "bikebasket train" the puppy according to my wife. Maybe she needs a teeny helmet too while we are at it.

I did this with my puppy and it seemed to work pretty good to establish basics, but it's pricey.

Is there anything you can do about power cords that are harder to move and stuff, like a conduit or something? I got most of them taken care of but we live in a crap old apartment and some of the outlets are not longer working. I have extension cables going over doors and stuff now. Maybe I am just being paranoid but I do not want a deep-fried puppy. Anyway, if anyone has some suggestions that would be great. She will not be unsupervised at all for the first month but still. I've been doing a lot of reading and the training steps are totally making sense as well. Thanks again for the tips!

Clicker is useless IMO, my husky knows if I have a treat or not, she aint no fool!

but seriously. I'd say find someone word of mouth that is legit, if you are willing try a puppy class but make sure its one with you there not where they do it for you otherwise uber fail...............also most of those puppy classes are worthless, they help your dog with about 25% of its training and the easiest part of it.........................you need someone knowledgeable for good training. Trust me I haven't found anyone that can get my husky to behave when SHE wants. For my old lab I had this crazy NATIVE, he was a dickhole but he did a helluv a job.
